Saban on hot mic calling MLaw a reach

It's not a reach if you don't have a 2nd rd or early 3rd pick.
Our next pick was 70 picks away.
That has nothing to do with whether a player was a reach. If anything that would be a way to justify it.

That said I think he wouldve gone to Buffalo or SF in the first if we hadnt drafted him.

It may be a bit of a reach, but they could have lost him if they traded down from 23 and he has upside and has the pass rushing traits that they needed.
Agreed. And if you believe the Cowboys they were ready to turn in the card with his name on it at 20; but made a calculated gamble he would be there at 23 and did the trade down with Philly.

I didn’t… not saying it wasn’t written but if anyone has anything showing Shefter or Jay Glazer or anybody relevant saying Lawrence is looking like a lock in the 1st for multiple teams post it. I’d feel better for reading 2-3 valid reports.

Also did not see anything about another trade back but I know the Bills traded back 3 times so their had to be some market.
yeah this was what i was curious about. we let the clock bleed down near the end, so clearly we were open for business and hoping for a trade, but nothing materialized. but then buffalo was able to wheel and deal. interesting

Completely different positions, but I remember a lot of people saying the same thing about making Tyler Smith a first round pick as well. And now, if he's not the best guard in the NFL, he's somewhere in the top three.

Now Saban sucks because he was thought one of our picks was a reach.
of course not, just even being a highly pedigreed coach doesn't make you an elite draft evaluator. as evidenced by his actual nfl drafts. it's a bit different when you're just able to pluck all of the best talent in the country at your whim.

problem is...his NFL draft profile had him mid/late second round.

and not even the best Edge.

9th ranked Edge
54 Overall rank
82 Grade
It was pretty well known that NFL teams had him ranked higher than the National media did before the draft.

I can’t see a guy with those measurables & work ethic at a premium position slide out of the first round.

Teams will reach a little for premium positions that have a talented prospect at that position.

That’s just how the draft is.

Look at Sonny Styles. Dude went top 10 almost solely on talent. Not because he’s the best linebacker.

Lawrence and everyone else we drafted will be afforded the opportunity to prove themselves. This bickering over who's doing what and why is neither necessary nor productive. Let's relax, here folks.
All of this stuff will be relegated to non-factors, given due time. It'll all be old news sooner than later. These players will all get their chances to prove themselves whether we like it or not. Let's not fuss.

The last DC to force a pick was DQ.

Mazi.

McClay played it smart and went along with everyone.

But you could read the body language.
This will fall on Parker but damn if you expect him to do the job then give him what he wants. Why bother hiring him? again this falls to him, he worked these guys our he did the interviews with these players, and he made it known who he wanted

Will McClay’s View on Malachi Lawrence

Cowboys VP of Player Personnel Will McClay has been vocal about his confidence in Malachi Lawrence, calling him a “pressure player” who fits well in any defensive scheme ClutchPoints. McClay emphasized that Lawrence’s value comes from his ability to get after the passer with speed and athleticism, which he believes can be a major asset to Dallas’s defensive line ClutchPoints.
McClay also highlighted Lawrence’s multiplicity — the versatility he can bring to the defense, including edge rush and other contributions ClutchPoints. This aligns with Dallas’s need for pass rush depth after trading away Micah Parsons, as the team seeks to bolster its sack production and overall defensive pressure ProFootballRumors.com.
Lawrence’s college career at UCF was impressive: from 2023–25, he recorded 19.5 sacks and 27.5 tackles for loss, showing a combination of size and athleticism that drew interest from multiple teams ProFootballRumors.com. McClay’s endorsement reflects the Cowboys’ belief that Lawrence can make an immediate impact, potentially seeing a large workload as a rookie ProFootballRumors.com.
In short, McClay’s comments indicate that Lawrence is seen as a high-value, scheme-agnostic pass rusher who can contribute immediately and add versatility to Dallas’s defense.

Lawrence in his pressed said he thought he would be a 3rd/4th round pick. Stephen and Jerry were cringing when he said that.
So even HE knew he was a reach. Lol. All this hand-wringing and doth protesteth too much confirms even most here knew he was a reach but are looking for every angle to say he wasn't. Different than the usual "we got a steal !!!!" chatter so I get the defensiveness. Pretty hilarious though. Up to Lawrence to ball out and none of this will be remembered.

reading this comment about lawrence looks like this is a will mcclay pick instead of parker telling the front office to pick this player in round one. i kind of cringed also when lawrence thought he would be drafted later instead of in the first round. he must of thought he won the lottery when he got the call from dallas in the first.

Parker and McClay worked with each other. Lawrence stock was going up from the east west game to the combines

all that matters is if he gets the QB in the dirt.....and stop the run.
get to the qb.
stop the run.
do that...who cares when you were drafted.
