Half of what you still see today when you watch NFL football on TV was invented by Tom Landry, i.e., passing from the shotgun, pre-snap motion, situational substitutions....

Heck, Tom Landry invented the position of outside linebacker when he took the two outer ends of the umbrella defense and moved them back. He invented the coaching position of Quality Control which means he revolutionized scouting the opponent prior to a game in the NFL.

It wasn't Landry's age that created the decline of that dynasty. It was 20 consecutive years of drafting at the bottom quarter of every round of each draft. Nobody ever seems to want to consider that.

Landry was working on a new version of the 3-4 defense when he got canned. Everyone knew Tex Schram was going to draft Troy Aikman. Michael Irvin was already there and so was half that offensive line.

I'm not claiming he would have won 3 Super Bowls but he would have rebuilt that team. How long did it take him to rebuild the team after 1974 when they failed to make the playoffs for the first time in a decade? They went to the Super Bowl the following year with help from the "dirty dozen " draft.

It was goodbye Doomsday, hello Doomsday II. There was no reason to believe that this defensive genius wasn't going to create Doomsday III.

Tom Landry was 65 when he got fired, younger than Bill Belichick, same age as Andt Ried when they were still winning Super Bowls. How old is the guy who fired him today?

Tom Landry could not have adjusted to free agency and today's players IMO. Hell, Jimmy Johnson could handle free agency as the Dolphins' head coach.

No question, he was a legend during his time, as was Chuck Nole but control ( no free agency) and discipline were critical to their success. In fact, I thought I heard or read that most of Landry's players hated him but had NO WAY out.

Sure, but could not handle free agency. This is just me but there are different eras others will choose. I think you divide those eras into pre-free agency vs post-free agency coz it changed how teams were built based on culture and control. I have little doubt that many HOF NFL coaches from the pre-agency eras would struggle today but not coz of their scheme or system but their inability to handle the money and culture of today's players. So to be clear, NO ONE is saying Tom Landry or Jimmy Johnson are NOT legendary coaches (that would be silly).

OP randomly chose five 'legend' coaches to build a franchise. He's not ranking them or suggesting they are the best.

An interesting question for me is trying to decide which coach would be successful in BOTH eras,
pre free-agency AND post free-agency.

There is no such thing as a complete rebuild. Every team that considers itself a rebuild still has some remnants of the old team.

The Patriots first Super Bowl team had ten starters that were drafted by them before Belichicks arrival.

In fact, the Patriots did not have a losing season during the four years prior to Belichick taking over.

When Jimmy Johnson rebuilt the Cowboys, that team still used Cowboys players acquired before Jimmy took over. They kept Jim Jeffcoat, Bill Bates, Mark Tuinei, Nate Newton, etc.

With an expansion team a head coach is literally starting with nothing.

The Saints won their Super Bowl with their 9th head coach.

The Dolphins won their first Super Bowl with their 2nd head coach. So did the Ravens.

The Bucs won a Super Bowl with their 7th head coach. So did the Seahawks.

Tom Landry is he only head coach in NFL history to be the first HC of an expansion team and win a championship with them.

He didn't just win a championship with them., He built them in a way that made them legitimate contenders for twenty years.

That is the guy you want to truly build a team from scratch.

He is also didn't get a proper college draft his first year.

But we forget, teams had 100% control over players' mobility before free agency. That gave coaches and GMs total control over a player's career. I remember a quote Tex Schram told one of his players during a negotiation... he could wear a star on his helmet or shirt (a reference to working at the Texaco gas station). lol

ALSO, Bum Bright was having financial problems and cut the scouting budget and coaching budget. Landry could not hire the best assistants anymore and scouting was falling off.

honestly a Head Coach is worthless with out a good QB. if you say match up 1 QB and 1 HC which would it be. i'd go with Little Bill and all the Cowboys QBs. we have historically had good QB play over the years with a Strong Head coach in bill Bellicheet you would have 12 or more super bowls over several decades
