Is it the coaches job to overcome the GM? Who does that? What coach is successful despite their GM?
 
He's making the same mistake Jason Garrett made. Don't become pals with the players you're coaching.
Tom Landry and Jimmy Johnson didn't hang out with their players. As a coach you want them to fear you.

Yes, it is in big D. How can you not know that? Jerry has to be comfortable with his puppet hires. It is very important to him. We're talking about the Dallas Cowboys, and how the GM runs this team. Every HC that comes through the door has to overcome his incompetence. It only happens with this team, not any other, just this one.
His hires have to constantly put up with his BS, in order to work with the guy. If you don't agree with his way of running things you don't get the gig. And if you do take the job, if offered, you wind up with stiffs like Marty's boy. You Jerry Jones doesn't hire coaches he can't control, and who are not willing to follow his lead. Thats why you have to have a certain mentality to work with him, and to overcome his nonsense. With the exception of Parcells, he doesn't hire tough minded coaches, which is what this undisciplined team needs. I've read and listened to local media, and people on this board talk about this for years.
"But can he work with Jerry" is a constant question that i hear.
I didn't say everything I wanted to say, but I've said enough.

Players aren't the same now. Rules aren't the same. There's little coaches can actually do to get players to fear them.

Naw that’s not what I’m asking. Is a head coach suppose to overcome his GM? Generally speaking? Doesn’t have to be the Cowboys it can be the Eagles or Browns or anyone…z

You aren’t able to answer what a GMs job is supposed to be? Fair enough. A successful team typically has a GM and coach who compliment each other. You can’t win without it. It’s why it’s been 30 year since their last conference championship. It’s why you see them ignore safety and defensive tackle for so many years.
