I don't have time to get into it right now but this ticks me off. This should. motivate the league to establish a program that evaluates every player once a year.

There is also a study about Cannon Crew Members in the Military receiving what is called cannot backlash from firing a cannon. The sound comes back to the cannoneer and rattles their brain that causes CTE also. The Military is trying to investigate and design better head gear to alleviate sound backlash.

It doesn't completely explain the final act but it does give more information in understanding senseless acts such as these.

This is a far cry from doing it 100s of times a year for 20 years though. I think that's really the point that people ignore. CTE is about repetitive head trauma, not singular events.

That's not to devalue that incident - most people who played sports experienced something similar - but it's not really the same thing.

I'm not shocked. Some people can juke and never have an ACL surgery...while other people ligaments and tendons get shredded. I'm sure some guys have a lower threshold for head injuries than others. And if you've been doing it since 12 years old...24/25 is not "too young" for a person to start showing signs.

I don’t think people fully know the risks. You kind of feel like oh ok well that’s not gonna be me. But it can. I think a lot of these guys have it or early stages of it before they even get to the NFL. I’m 99.9 percent sure Cam Skattebo has despite him thinking it’s a myth.

Based on the data available prior to the draft, he showed enough signs that should have prohibited us or anyone for that matter....from drafting him. He needed HELP...not MORE collisions!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about the players take a 30% paycut, and we'll go back to 12 regular season games and 8 playoff teams like the old days? That's a max 15 games for the Super Bowl teams.

The whole debate is a farce. Football was always scary and violent. Society is just far softer than it was 50 years ago.

It really is a labor of love and sacrifice by the players. It's their chosen profession. It doesn't choose them. Nobody is forcing the young men to play a gladiator sport. They don’t know what they are sacrificing. They are told CTE doesn’t exist and quit being soft. Just the reality;

Yeah, that’s the issue, they say u can ONLY diagnose it on autopsy (not sure why MRI won’t show SOMETHING). There’s so so so so so many players who live good lives after ball through, they are willing to take the risks with the game.

As I understand it, the only definitive way to diagnose is through autopsy. Progress is being made in advanced imagery and biomarker recognition that could potentially lead to the ability to diagnose a living person, but we aren't there yet.

The holdup is being able to ID subtle changes over an extended period. Brain patterns have slight variations from patient to patient and finding one definitive indicator is next to impossible. Instead, potential CTE patients would need a series of baseline tests and periodic follow-ups to study subtle patterns that could indicate degradation linked to CTE. The problem is neurologists are still trying to figure out exactly what to look for. Relatively new arena of medicine means more data is necessary to pinpoint probable indicators that can be used for definitive identification. Data acquisition takes time, and finding willing test subjects becomes problematic when the affected population is more concerned with securing their roster spots than focusing on their neurological health.

The link is more to years playing contact sports, so I think the greater solution is banning tackle football early on. It's stupid for 8 year olds to play tackle football.

Yeah I kind of hate it, but if it actually helped I would completely understand banning organized tackle football until high-school.

Its tough though because they wont find data to support such measures until they find alternate ways of testing.
