Twitter: It's offical: Pickens will play on the franchise tag

If he has a good or similar season to last year, he will most likely be gone.

Hopefully, the team can take advantage of having two #1 caliber receivers this year?

We also now have to pay him $27.3 million no matter what ... but I'm pretty sure that locked in the moment he signed his tag. So the only way we could have rescinded that guarantee for this season would have been to offer him a long-term deal that lowered the 2026 guarantee. (Most likely, any long-term deal would have guaranteed this season fully, along with up to $100 million.)

Now maybe everyone will stop with the notion that he is only a me first player. I literally do not remember a player who was so worthy of a second contract playing on the franchise tag with so little drama. But yet he still gets a bad rap from everyone even though he handled this with incredible maturity

As expected and it'll be interesting what will happen after this year. At the moment Pickens was likely seeking a long term contract 34+ million a year, so the franchise tag looks pretty good for the Cowboys and gives them more time to evaluate the viability of a larger contract.

On the downside a long term contract next year if he performs could hit high 30s/low 40s. However, maybe he also ups his trade value which makes that a more viable option.

1 year of no drama and good performance does not erase all the years from Pittsburgh and the prior drama.

I’m ok with the cowboys being cautious on this one - I think of it the same way you would with interviews, he’s made it through many of them but he could still be a bad hire. Let’s see how this year looks and if you get back to back years of consistency in both performance and attitude then he gets a second contract

Or traded for a ton of value…either way cowboys are being smart here and based on the risk it’s a good position they are in

Ticking time bomb. Guy cant handle himself. Throwing the ball in the opponent face. Shoving the opponent after the play. Showboating. Gun celebrations. He will cost this team multiple times again this season. Death. Taxes. And Pickens dumb penalties. Lock it in.

Not new news at all.

Shefty is all over it though.
Right and like we needed another one on this site didn't that dude COO COO post redundant stuff already do that yesterday as well But here's the kicker they literally on ESPN are talking about none other than George Pickens and whether he'll be on the Cowboys next year they have started early trying to stir the poop//

This is a never ending story they want drama to come out of this like it did last year with Parsons so they're trying to create it they are probably very sad and upset that this didn't turn into a holdout and some crazy mess so now they're trying to already stir it up for next year..ughh I mean don't they have something else to talk about besides George Pickens and they want him to blow up they want him to turn into the next Antonio Brown the next Micah Parsons they want this to fall apart and there's no other stories to talk about

If the guy gets suspended like Snowden the guy from Detroit who they cut the corner I don't remember his name why don't they talk about these guys they should be plastered poster boys for the NFL on how not to act that this is the stories but they're not big enough names they should be every day talking about this to remind other NFL players to not do this this is how not to do it hey rookies this is not the way you act and how you take care of your business outside of football..

But yet they're picking on George Pickens and the Cowboys because it's a story it will always be a story it will always lead with anything Cowboys.. :espn: :banghead::mad:

This isn't news to me, and I have never believed the Cowboys would offer GP a path to a third season on the roster. Playing on the tag with the Cowboys this year is GP's tryout with another team beyond 2026.

Dak

It a clear large decision whether to attempt to retain him long term. The team has time before that decision needs to be made, and there’s no problem with that. Even the player is clamming up, because he has to….well, it’s in his best interest anyway.

If they tag him again next year, it might not feel so fair, but those are the rules.

But he can still be traded, right? So, it's still not set in stone that he'll be a Cowboy this season. So people can still talk about it.

What's it for us to WAIT because we're not sure due to his so called behavior I'm assuming, yet he can be a good guy, end up getting paid by us, and going off to be a bad player for this team in terms of behavior
