Everyone's Championship Talk Vs What & When Jimmy Johnson Said

The NFL is so competitive, to win , so many things have to fall your way.
Having an incompetent GM who is creating an unhealthy culture on top of the other obstacles is just too much to overcome.
With Jerry the GM we are at a severe competitive disadvantage.
I am hesitant to describe it as 'severe', although I will not argue the description. In my opinion, the franchise has occasionally trotted out players and coaches during certain seasons with talent and coaching >>>good enough<<< to win beyond the divisional round. Personally, my best example is the 2007 team. I know others will disagree and suggest 2014, 2016, etc.

Regardless of the season, all of these seemingly capable teams did not have 'IT'. They (and I mean they as in e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e on the field and those standing on the sidelines) did not meet the challenge. They did not rise to the occasion. They lacked the emotional and physical aptitude to make the run. And yeah. One time, the main influence thought HIS TEAM could be led to the promised land by a rookie quarterback, something that has NEVER been done in the Super Bowl era.

Dismiss my long-windedness, and I will end with what I have always thought in a nutshell. He does not play. He does not coach. Regardless, Jerry Jones SUUUUUUUUUCKS the GRIT out of his own teams.

Landing the helicopter during practice was a pretty disrespectful move. The coach, the sport. The players. It’s all a circus.

I just tried again, lol
See my above post.
Did I do better?
It is not a matter of better. Everyone's opinion matters. My OP is simple according to this (these are example quotes and are not word-for-word reposts):

Player or coach says, "We're Super Bowl capable."

CowboysZone member A says, "I do not think they should have said that."

CowboysZone member B replies, "What is wrong with what they said? It is the same as what Jimmy Johnson said."

My OP simply suggests this conversational counterpoint to defend what players and coaches are saying about the Super Bowl should not be taken the same way as what Johnson said. In my opinion, context is almost completely opposite for both.

Seriously, players and coaches are talking Super Bowl, in the OFFSEASON, after an almost week-to-week sub-performing 2025 season, that followed a worse season-ending starting quarterback injury laden 2024 season, that came after a pathetically historic 2025 season-ending loss to a freaking seventh seed.

But hey? Good draft. Good offseason player acquisitions. A new defensive coach held in high regard. "We're Super Bowl capable!"

I hope so. As always, time will tell... but Johnson did not make comments like that in the same way.

Anyone can be optimistic. That is an individual self-perspective.

The one undeniable variable in the Dallas Cowboys equation is the work environment all players and coaches have remained immersed in. That is the Jerry Jones, the owner/GM, nonsensical partnership work environment. It is the long-standing constant variable despite all of the annual tweaks and whistles, the good and the bad, that he has authored directly and indirectly.

It is why I believe this team or any capable team may somehow overcome his influence and win it all somehow, but that it will happen despite him. Unlike other NFL coaches and rosters, Dallas teams have three instead of two obstacles every season. Everyone else has to excel beyond their capabilities and what their opponents are capable of. Cowboys teams have Jerral W. Jones, Sr., 'I am GM for life baby!' miasma to overcome.
Wow, what a great synopsis of what we have to overcome in Dallas to try to get back to a conference championship (remember those?). Jerry is the cancer, the crime boss, and power broker who has been giving the fan base the finger for 30 years, insisting on running it his way. This season will be entertaining and that’s all Jerry cares about.

Some billionaires seem to think their bank account somehow makes them the smartest person in the room. God, I wish Mark Cuban bought the Cowboys instead of the Arkansas hillbilly.

Exactly, so why are fans shocked that longtime fans have a huge dose of skepticism when we’ve had nothing to celebrate for three decades? I hope this is THE year but with zero fundamental changes to how the franchise is run, how can anyone be optimistic?
It baffles me too. It's one thing to have been born after the glory days, but you can read history even as a young child. Just knowing it has been 30 years ought to be enough to make even the new marks skeptical. Frankly, everyone needs to be in "prove it" mode.

I'd take the Saudi Oil Billionaires or the Chinese owning the Cowboys over the JonesBoys at this point. Virtually ANYONE not named "Jerry Jones" or related to him.

It’s a circus by design, as most already know, right?
It is certainly big top stuff. Yes, most already know. It is not necessary whether anyone accepts or rejects the fact that he is who he is.

The thing that gets me is the bubble anyone puts around the management of his football operations. Just because he is Jerry Jones, and even if he has become so 'hands off' that he is somehow a near or complete non-factor, people should only focus on any positive and encouraging actions of the front office. Simply forget that he is still the general manager. Simply forget him continuing to manage the team.

That I will never understand. This is not an exaggeration. Every day, ordinary people question the management of their local businesses if those businesses do not provide goods and services that meet their expectations. However, should the management of a multi-billion-dollar, worldwide-known, historically rich National Football League franchise's football operation receive breaks from criticism?

Uh uh. Nope.

Take what I am about to say in a humorous way.

You say my wall of text is too long and you did not read it. Jab or not, you are saying 506 (evenly distributed for reading) words is 'TLDR'.

Let us both agree you just posted the gospel truth. No question. I am totally with you. Tell me this though...

... how do you describe this (link) 1,157-word masterpiece? Wait, hold up. As a bonus, I will add Peter King and Chris Berman words from the videos embedded in my OP and add them to my 506.

umm... That boosted the total word count to 703. Oh wait. That was a quick count since I didn't remove the embedded timestamps inside the transcript from the total. Let's just settle on approximately 650 or so words for the whole kit-and-kaboodle--so my essay still falls 500 words short of yours.

lol.
still TOO LONG

TLDR

Fan Zone discussions have become centered around what current coaches and players have said about playing in the Super Bowl. The talk is not unique. The same talk has been ongoing, almost uninterrupted, for decades by other coaches and players, and especially in Dallas.

Lately, what Jimmy Johnson had previously said about playing and winning the Super Bowl has been introduced as a counterpoint defense for present-day comments. Is it the same thing, though? I invite anyone to add additional cited quotes (not hearsay) Johnson made--only during the time he was Dallas' head coach--in addition to the few I am posting here:

“We’ll win here, and we’ll win big. Write it down.” (quoted by Sports Illustrated's Peter King)

These were his words after becoming the team's second-ever head coach. Unfounded or not, his self-confidence came from what he accomplished at the college level, including winning or competing in national championship games.
“We’ll be in the playoffs.” (link)
Here's something to consider about what Johnson said during the offseason before the 1991 season. Dallas opened the previous season 3-7. There had been obvious improvement made in comparison to Johnson's first season, but there seemed like equally obvious room for greater growth.
Then it happened. Roster improvement and the Johnson system clicked. The Cowboys beat the Rams, Washington, Saints, and Cardinals, evened their record at 7-7, and greatly improved their opportunity of being in the 1990 playoffs. Endure 53 seconds of Chris Berman to refresh old members' recollections and provide better context for younger members who were too young or not even born yet to understand what happened next:

Apologies to Babe Laufenberg, but Johnson's team was in the same situation as practically all NFL teams losing their starter: done for the season. Months later, and before the next season began, Johnson spoke with self-confidence that he already had a playoff-caliber team with his now-healthy starting quarterback. On to the supposedly best Johnson quote that counterpoints have rested upon:
“We will win the ball game. And you can put it in three‑inch headlines.” (link)
^ Johnson said this in late January 1994. His self-confidence nested within the knowledge of having a team that matured FROM:
  • Reaching the divisional round in 1991
  • Winning Super Bowl XXVII
  • Decisively winning 12 of 16 games AFTER a two-game Emmitt Smith holdout AND winning a huge game AT New York (the legend of Smith grows), cementing a #1 playoff seed AND dispatching the pesky Packers in a game that was 17-3 Dallas at halftime
Questions (and I will leave Jerry Jones' decades-old diarrhea of the mouth out of this):
  1. Should playoff and Super Bowl comments made by players and coaches over the past 30 years, including this offseason, be taken the same as what Johnson said?
  2. If the answer is yes, where has players' and coaches' inner assurance come from?
  3. Could players instead mainly base their confidence on seeing peers like Seattle bounce from 9-8 (winning record), 10-7 (winning record) to last season's Super Bowl champions?

Help me out here. The we'll be in the playoffs comment, was that when he was being interviewed, and an answer to a certain situation? I'm trying to figure out if it was what I'm thinking.

The question went something like this. If you go relatively injury free and not make the playoffs, would you consider that a failure? His answer was, that's not going to happen, we'll be in the playoffs. Or something like that. The video is out there, I just can't find it.

Not sure. I will do some digging and see if I can find it.

Not sure if the interviewer asked more than what you have already said, but I found that embedded in the YouTube video, "NFL Films: Wizard - The Jimmy Johnson Story (1994)" (entire 45-minute video link). I clipped and uploaded only that particular eight-second interaction:
