They extended him.before injury.

He just never recovered. His apss protection was average to above average and he never got his mobility back. He can't step to the right and has a Choppy, life the foot and stump move to the right and doesn't slide any more. He doesn't even move to the left.

Steele has never been able to pass block. We knew that when we gave him a big contract. At this stage of his career, he's not going to suddenly be able to pass block.

That’s pretty much a myth.

If he was being forced to “stay and block”, his usage would go down. It hasn’t. He’s getting just as many balls as ever.
  • 2023 - 102 targets
  • 2024 - 104 targets
  • 2025 - 102 targets
Blocking?
  • Ferguson lined up in the slot or split out 60% of his snaps last year.
  • When he does chip and release jt takes about half a second off the route
  • Spann-Ford is assigned almost all of the heavy in-line blocking duties while Jake is usually running routes (that’s the best term I guess for “run 7 yards and fall down”)
  • When he is asked to block in the run game, he usually gets their DBs or LBs outside, he’s not helping the tackles block edge rushers.

My take: He’s slow, he can’t separate and he can’t break tackles.

He’s had two straight declining years but it’s not the fault of the offensive line.

Receptions - 82 - 14th Overall (3rd among TEs)
Yards - 600 - 62nd Overall (13th among TEs)
Yards Per Catch - 7.3 - 132nd Overall (90th among TEs)
Fumbles - 3 - 1st among TEs (he had four in 2024)

He caught some touchdowns last year but that was, honestly, part of the problem.

He got the second most red zone targets last year and our red zone offense was one of our biggest issues.

I’ve already moved into the “Jake’s a problem and not in a good way” category. The only propel he helped last year were his fantasy owners

I think we use him differently with Lamb and Pickens. We want those two to be the downfield threats, so we let Ferguson be the outlet. I think fans are looking to make him a problem for some reason. He did have some drops and fumbles to clean up, but we had one of the most prolific offenses in the league, and he caught 82 of those passes.

I think we have real issues to worry about without turning the fact that his YPC was low into an issue.
 
yeah he was getting beat by our pass rushers too so no surprise,the sad part is we have no other option at RT since Shelton is extremely raw.

Hmm, that bone bruise and mcl strain was against the browns in the season opener in 2024. He signed his new extension a full 12 months later.

If it was a lingering knee issue, his YAC would have sucked in 2024 when he was actually hurt. Instead, his YAC was 5.2 that year, all post injury. Last year it dropped to a career-low 3.7 when he played all 17 games.

He wasn’t still hurt. Defenses (and Schottenheimer) realized he was compromised and all he was capable of was work as a short yardage safety valve.

You list four or five limitations to where he sounds like he needs a walker. Seems to me he’s a limited, unathletic football player right now and we’re paying him as the 6th highest paid tight end for at least two more years.

The escape hatch doesn’t open until 2028

.... at some point they should take a chance on Shelton, and get those wheels turning. Season hinges on Dak staying healthy.

And how is his YAC affected by blocking? Is he illegally blocking downfield when he catches passes?
