Change will come with Stephen in charge

I would pay to see someone do an impression of him answering the reporter's question about curtains...

"...What about the SUN??? What about the MOON???"
Imagine my shock when I noticed the other day that Jerry Jones has a song writing credit for The Beatles "Here Comes the Sun".

Here comes the sun, doo-doo-doo
Here comes the sun
And I say, "It's all right"

"I don’t have a succession plan, I don’t,” Jerry insists, admitting that he’s already started to pass the baton. “One day I just won’t be here to toss my two cents in.”
With his dying breath, Jerry will sign off on something that screws the team for another four years.

Had Stephen been in charge, Woodson believes, quarterback Dak Prescott and wideout CeeDee Lamb would’ve been extended months earlier than they were, saving the Cowboys tens of millions — but depriving them of months of headlines. Last year’s Micah Parsons trade? Woodson says the talented edge rusher would’ve been shipped out of town a lot sooner if Stephen were calling the shots.
Those are HUGE blunders that Jerry can't explain. Remember all the threads in here crucifying Jerry back then? Between signing Dak late, CeeDee late and waiting until the last minute to trade Parsons I'm not sure which is worse. And those are just 3 examples!

Very long article about the transition from Jerry to Stephen. No claims a real GM will be hired. Just that Stephen has no ego issues and will cut out a lot of the nonsense around the organization.

Recommended read.

The approach has irked some former players. Woodson, whose commercial real estate firm rents office space at The Star, the Cowboys’ 91-acre practice facility that doubles as an exorbitant entertainment and business venture, puts it this way: “The team keeps making emotional decisions. They keep guys because Jerry likes them personally. I don’t think that leash will be as long with Stephen.”

Aikman sees it, too. “From my interactions with him, Stephen doesn’t have the ego his father has. That’ll serve him well.”

The franchise under Stephen Jones, Aikman believes, will look and feel more like a typical NFL team, one where the owner doesn’t insist on playing the role of main character. “Stephen will be less inclined to want to get all the credit,” he says. “And I think he’ll create an environment conducive to winning.”

“I guarantee you Stephen wanted that to be a dead issue, and dad let it ride,” Woodson says of the Parsons back-and-forth, which dragged on for months and ended with the Cowboys sending him to Green Bay last August for two first-round picks and tackle Kenny Clark. “I think the off-the-field stuff the organization had to deal with — showing up late, not being a team guy, paying a guy that kind of money when he’s not really a leader? Yeah, that s— ain’t flying.

“Jerry loves personalities, because Jerry is a personality,” Woodson continues. “I don’t think that’s Stephen’s deal.”

Stephen’s deal? Restraint. Rigidity. A weakness, he calls it, if he’s not careful.

“With agents these days, you give them an inch and they’ll take a mile,” Stephen says. He doesn’t like giving an inch, never has. “If a deal’s within striking distance, Jerry will lose this point and this point and this point and if it gets done, he’ll live with it. It’ll eat at me a little more.”

Stephen has less of an ego and not inclined to want to get all the credit..................

Curious, how many owners or GMs have basically their own radio show to brag about how great they are doing?

I'll believe we have changed when I see we have changed.

I tend to trust Darren and Troy's assessment of the situation.

Those are two guys, that did win championships under Jerry's tenure, that have never shied away from giving harsh opinions on the organization and the current cast of characters.

The main question I have is - will Stephen hire a GM and be willing to let said GM run football operations?

I think it's part of the contract of being the "Flagship" radio network. People are quick to turn their nose up at those radio shows, but seem to forget that they also have on-air time with Rangers people as well.

Donnie Nelson used to call in from time to time as well.

I'll dispel the notion that Stevie doesn't have an ego problem like Jerry.

1) He got his job without any qualifications or experience whatsoever other than nepotism, and keeps it despite decades of failure.

2) "Drought"

3) Asks "how does this happen" without looking in the mirror.

I found it odd that as long and extensive as that article is it never once addresses that issue. It's the change people care about.

But let's be honest, if Stephen were to hire a GM it would just be Will McClay. There would be no real structural change in the organization.

On a side note, the article talks about how John Stephen Jones is now learning on the job as his Dad did many years ago. So our kids can one day say yeah Stephen sucks but John Stephen will turn this franchise around.

Very true.

I guess when you're standing next to Jerry anyone looks humble and selfless.

I’m inclined to believe the former players who have insight on this. SJ has never really struck me as a guy who needs his ego stroked. Maybe to him the teams success will be enough to stroke whatever ego he has.

On a side note
I will say this I think Charlotte should play a bigger role in the organization in the future, by all accounts she seems pretty damn smart. What that role might look like I’m not sure.

Jerry is a narcissist who is functional. It would very rare for even his son to share this very rare trait. Even given years of entitlement…it’s hard to replicate that kind of egomaniacal indifference toward how he looks to others. Stephen will be different for sure.

Maybe that’s something SJ addresses once the old man is no longer here. Maybe he’s just not saying it out loud out of respect. I’m sucking on that hopium, but maybe it’s just that simple.

This is coming from the guy that put the so-called championship draught in air quotes.

My problem with that is Stephen has had no problem serving as the fake Director of Player Personnel all these years. If he was this reasonable rational thinker why wouldn't he tell Dad he needs to focus on other aspects of the team and a legitimate personnel guy brought in or even elevated from within?

I don't buy the no ego Stephen.

I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you.

Doesn't that just mean he's going to clench the purse strings even tighter than they are now? He doesn't want to give an inch in a league where you've got to know when to give and when to hold firm.

I have a very strong belief that Stephen is a football idiot and an eventual train wreck running the Cowboys. However two players who I consider among the smartest to ever play here in Aikman and Woodson disagree with me. That does make me reassess things.

I'll probably still agree with myself in review but there will be some reflection first.
Problem is….he still holds the checkbook and the GM he will supposedly hire is going to have to impress by wanting to be on board with zero free agents. So, what will be the real difference other than a potential coaching upgrade? With Jerry gone, it could suddenly be an attractive job, but I don’t expect Stephen to change much.

He seems really proud that he figured out that you overpay for free agents. Nice work there.
