Penalties remain an annoying issue

This is one of the things I'd be more concerned about than the final score. Dallas had penalties that erased positive plays. For example, Milton had a scramble that would have produced a 10-yard gain, only for an illegal-shift penalty to wipe it out. That's exactly the sort of thing coaches hate.

Preseason is when young players are supposed to demonstrate:

• assignment discipline
• alignment
• communication
• situational awareness

If you're repeatedly creating your own negative plays, you're making the coaching staff's evaluation harder. And some of these players were fighting for their jobs! Maybe the final 53 will be more disciplined than the scrubs were tonight. But this was an issue last year too. So until we see less penalties, this is a lingering issue. AGAIN!

Exactly. I am concerned about the Cowboys getting lazy after a couple of victories and taking it easy. We were looking unbeatable after the first two preseason games with really disciplined play and low penalties, and this game we showed up undisciplined and sloppy. If we take that into the playoffs, this is why we don't get out of round 2 for like 30 years.

I was impressed with the comeback at the end however. The team didn't just roll over and get destroyed, which is a positive.

Yup, that's also a difference, but the penalties are a problem

We have seen less penalties. By a wide margin. 4 last week and 6 last night. Thats how many penalties the least penalized teams in the league commit on a weekly basis.

Penalties are indeed an impediment to a team's goals, but we are talking about a preseason roster. We should expect less penalties when our starters are playing in the regular season. I wouldn't pay too much attention to the penalty issue judging from a roster of non-starters.

They had only 4 penalties the second preseason game. I wouldn't even take stock in that last game. Most of those guys are not going to even be on the team. We do need to see improvement here for its been an issue for us for years. When Garrett was here I used to say you could literally play Benny Hill music and sync it to the Cowboys because we made so many stupid mistakes. I hope that 53 makes less mistakes than we ever seen here.

They've done it all camp and they will do it in the season

He also had most the penalties in that first preseason game. Take those out and we did pretty good on them.

It is the NFL you can only do so much to discipline players in todays game but this is something.

exactly and it's surely as hell still going on!! Sometimes you can just tell when it's going to happen, or I get myself ready to say YUP THAT FLAG IS ON US every time I see there's a flag on the play

And to your point the 2 teams that were in the Super Bowl were coincidentally in the bottom 8 of team penalties last season.

Penalties and turnover ratio have to improve in 2026.
