105.3 on Joe Milton being cut

Yeah, probably focused on becoming a starter in the league, and why I could never figure out why he wanted to come here.

Focused on the wrong things?
??????
He can't run the offense in full. There's a lot that happens before and after the ball is snapped.

Against first team defenses with game plans, you can't just wing it. Most backups tend to do that.

Howell plays the position more completely in that regard.

Simple as that.

Just because Jerruh made Al Davis trades for Phenom Trance and Backflip Bazooka Joe, does not mean they have any trade value. Both times Jerruh was competing against himself, when he has extensions of extending Dak again.
People always overestimate trade value. They see Jerry overpay in player trades so they assume all teams are doing that.

The truth is that the only time you win on a trade your-player-for-their-pick(s) is when you don't want to trade the player and the other team wants them bad enough to overpay.

Everyone assumes these days that if a player was traded they were about to be released. While that's true in some cases, it's not true in every case.

If someone right now offered a 3rd around pick for Lamb, would the Cowboys accept? Of course not. Now, let's say a team offered four #1 round picks for Lamb. Would they trade him? Absolutely! Not because they don't like or value him but simply because those #1 round picks would be worth more than one player.

It was an interesting video, but the thing the first guy said about preferring talent is completely wrong.

When a QB repeatedly hits WRs in stride 40 yards down field, people say “Wow that guy’s got a heck of an arm! Look how many passing yards he has!” This is erroneous. Every QB in the league can throw 40 yards. Heck, if you can’t throw 50 yards, you probably get cut in minicamp. Thats not arm talent, that’s learned skill from repetitions and experience.

When Tom Brady came out of college, he may have been the least gifted QB in draft history. He was skinny, weak, can’t run, and he did not have a great arm. It was probably about league average. Over time he built it up and people may remember how impressive he looked in the later 2010’s when he was firing howitzers to Gronk and Edelman and Evans.

One of the most weak-armed QBs in recent memory is Matt Ryan. League MVP Matt Ryan. And a guy who was even worse than Matt Ryan was Drew Brees. One of Brees’ negative coming out of college was his substandard arm strength. This was Mel Kiper’s mockup of Drew in 2001 before the combine:

“I like the way Brees went about his business and managed the Boilermaker offense, but during a structured individual workout he'll have to prove that he has the necessary arm strength to shine in any pro system.”

And then he had a nasty shoulder injury in SD, before he went to New Orleans. What a lot of people don’t know is Drew never fully recovered from that. His arm was worse in New Orleans than in San Diego. He was throwing for 5000 yards with a pool Noodle. Today he can’t even lift his arm over his head due to that injury that never got fully fixed.

Now let’s talked about Physically talented QBs: Cam was league MVP, and completely toast at 31. Daunte Culpepper had a monster arm and was a wrecking ball when he took off, couldn’t even complete 60% of his passes by the time he was 30. Michael Vick was a perennial pro bowler in the 20’s, career backup by just 33. Joe Flacco might have the strongest arm we’ve ever seen, last time he started double digit games was at 32.

What is my point? Matt Ryan completed 65% of his passes for 4500 yards at 37. Drew Brees threw for nearly 30,000 yards(!) after his 35th birthday. Tom Brady was a pro bowl player at 45. Having the talent Joe has is almost a negative in NFL, because he will rely too much on that talent, and when it doesn’t serve him the way it need to or it’s gone due to age, it’s a problem. But the less talented QBs have to do more to compete with the talented ones. Hone the skills, watch more tape, stay after to work on the small stuff. This is why they’re still good when they get old, because skill stays, and they already know how to succeed when athletically disadvantaged.

Which brings up 2 big points: how many people here knew Peyton Manning did not have a super strong arm coming out of college? As pointed out before, just because he’s hitting Marvin Harrison in stride over and over again way down field does not mean his arm is great. But the media touted that it does, when Peyton will be the first to tell you Eli always had a way better arm than he did. And then Peyton had the bad neck thing and lost all his arm strength in 2011. Over the next 3 years he had a historically great statistical stretch in Denver that blew away anything he did in Indianapolis…. With what resembled a broken lawn chair hanging out of his shoulder joint.

The second point is Dak Prescott. How many here can tell me what velocity Dak threw at the combine? Ready?….. 54 MPH. Not bad. Carson Wentz was 57 MPH the same year and Patrick Mahomes hit 60 MPH the year after, to show the scale it lands on. Guess what Jalen Hurts threw for in 2020; ready?……….. 54 MPH. Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott, at least as rookies, had similar arm talent (at least in that specific test). 2 major differences between them: Dak is 5ish years older, so he’s far more developed and has improved his arm strength like Brady did, and Jalen has always ran a lot in college and the NFL, so his attempts metric is far lower than Dak’s…. Meaning Dak has far more experience and skill behind his throwing, and it reflects on the field. You can compare Jalen’s now to maybe 2018 Dak. 2026 Dak is probably not a realistic thing he may ever hit unless he stops running and does what Dak has done to be an almost exclusive pocket passer.

So in TL;DR, my overall point is physical talent at QB really doesn’t matter. The guys who made it preserved regardless of their physical tools. And Joe Milton getting cut has nothing to do with “arm potential” or “physical gifts” or how great he looked in a preseason game. Nick Foles has a podcast and he brought up an interesting point: a QB should never care about his statline in a preseason game, because the coaches don’t. They need to see how he runs the offense against a live defense who isn’t playing nice. It’s not about taking deep shots and hitting them because the third string deep safety sucks, it’s about getting the play in and to the line at a good time. It’s about immediately taking the checkdown based on what the defense shows. It’s about properly adjusting offensive personal when there’s confusion before the snap.

Joe didn’t get cut because he didn’t do enough in those games, he got cut because he didn’t do the little things that are what really make great QBs great. He got cut because of the meeting room, because of playbook retention, because of comfortability after 2 years in the offense. Joe would have looked cooler than Sam if the #2 needed to play, but this is saying Sam is far more reliable to do what the coach needs to improve the chance of winning. Checkdown Charlie wins football games, it’s always been that way.

Is there such a thing as a celebrity backup QB who was never a full time starter or star at the position in the League?

How could he be focused on the wrong things? Smh...having that star on the helmet and the attention it brings really does something to some players.

Hard to imagine a player "focused on the wrong things" when the coaches are literally all around him every day for weeks during training camp and preseason.

This seems more like someone's freelancing the comments or words they heard through their own translation process.

For example, the comments Schottenheimer made in the press conference earlier was that Sam Howell has done a great job of learning and understanding the playbook.

I could see someone reading into that as "Milton was released so that must mean he didn't, so he focused on the wrong things" rather than it being an accurate statement of what happened.

Schottenheimer seemed very adament about wanting Milton back even saying they would love to have him back, so I think most of these so-called fault-based reasons are just copium or attention seeking media at this point.
I think a lot of everyone is wrong in here you know your other post saying what you think might have really happened I already said it I think that they asked him to stay here as QB3 and he got angry He probably responded very immaturely and it's OK that he did that maybe that's what they're talking about now He was focused on thinking he was better than he was that he was too good to accept the Cowboys demotion in a way in his mind so he wanted to be released..

Now maybe cooler heads prevail maybe he understands the Cowboys were correct and I would hope that he would put his feelings aside and accept the practice squad here with Dallas knowing the coaches the playbook and his teammates they all want him here I want him here but he has to want to be here I think that's what the coaches are saying he has to be happy being QB3 at least to start the season.

I can't imagine they're trying to demean his character in any way but I'm Betting he got Upset at some point when he found out that he wasn't getting the QB2 job and maybe acted poorly that's my gut feeling..

You’ll be fine, you’ll be great, gonna have the world on a plate. - Mama Milton

I miss Steven McGee (said no one ever)
I don't even miss Cooper Rush and he won some damn regular season games. He was overrated when he was here there was small group of people in here that I still have Alan ignore but I know who you are that think Cooper Rush was better than Prescott and earned the job because of what they felt he did or saw he did and they were all wrong apparently didn't breakdown games and stats and what he really did and what the rest of the team helped him do and they overrated the guy but at least yes he had one of five and three record here was it 6 and 3 He was OK he was a pretty solid backup I like him..

Sam Howell is basically Cooper rushed with more legs He's just more mobile That's why they kept him they wanted somebody with a little more experience that felt they can run the offense just a little bit better and moments where you don't panic as much because you've been there..

I've seen better players leave and me not miss them I don't miss Parsons but I loved him when he was here but once that door shuts I'm a fan of the team and the uniform and the star and as much as I like you when you leave you're no longer a cowboy and I really don't care what happens to you..

To be a quarterback (whether starter or backup)in the NFL, it requires leadership above all other capabilities. Joe has the physical talents for the job but falls short on being a leader. I don’t think his fun-loving approach endeared him very much to the brass.
Wow you're half right I mean I agree with some of that it's not the leader part He needs more experience it took Sam Darnold and some of these other quarterbacks like Geno Smith and Daniel Jones and others hell Baker Mayfield was immature probably should not have been cut the Browns were stupid but it took him a while he figured it out I think at some point with enough experience he will get an opportunity but he needs to stay mature down to earth come back to the Cowboys get on the practice squad he just needs more seasoning that's it that's why they call it a season.

It's not like Sam Howell is that much better than him he just been there before he's been in regular season games he's won he's lost he's experienced the NFC East this is why he got the job He is a more mobile version of Cooper Rush and I knew he was going to get the job as long as he didn't just be a disaster in pre season..

Milton just needs a little more time I think if he comes to the Cowboys has another really good offseason really good preseason keeps looking strong that he may come out of it next year with the backup job..

Focused on the wrong things...
Maybe Milton was already asking for a contract x-tension....lol
.....on advice from Dak
Backflip was done as soon as Howell was signed to a guarantee $2.5M contract. He obviously did not do enough last season, to prevent this signing.
