Might be Dak's most important season yet

I think this season might be Dak's most important season yet. As many of you know, I think Dak is a spectacular QB. I do appreciate that he's our QB and is a top QB.

However, on paper, we have a significantly more talented team than he's had in much of his career. As long as the defence is good and the offense is as dangerous as it was last year (along with Aubrey), I think this is an important season for Dak.

His contract expires after the 2028 season (https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/19089/dak-prescott/contract/summary), but apparently has an out after next season that only costs $55 mil in dead cap.

So, I think, if the team is what I think it can be, then this division should be more than winnable for us, and a lot of people are saying that. I think that our best chance in the playoffs is to win the division. And I think from there, if our defence is decent, I think the pressure will be on Dak.

If things do not go as planned this year and we can't at least get to the division round (or, beyond if we have a home division round game too), I can see Jerry taking a QB next draft. I could easily see a new QB coming in and sitting for a year or two as, if nothing else, a leverage play for Daks next contract.

They're not going to be picking early enough for one of the premier QB prospects so picking a second-tier QB at, say, 25, is a waste of a pick on a team trying to content.

I don't think Jerry Jones is gonna put an onus on how he plays and whether he would extend him or redo Prescott's contract that is not how Jerry sees Dak he sees Dak as a lifer here Good battery different how you feel about him it doesn't matter I don't think he has to worry about that...


You do realize Prescott has put his body in his mind in some of the best shape he's ever been in this is not a Romo situation where he let his body go his time was running out in the NFL and I don't see that with Prescott he could play here the rest of his career another 34 years or he could play elsewhere He can go chasing a ring somewhere like Matthew Stafford did it's the same thing I think that he could do that it's like when Peyton Manning left the Colts shocking but not this is the NFL they're becoming like the NBA and it look around at college football I don't think Prescott has anything to worry about..


Maybe this is you worried about whether Prescott stays a cowboy or not whether they cut him and he's a cap casualty but I don't see it I think he'll be here for a while regardless of how this season turns out because look at last year look at all the years that he had to play with historically bad defenses or no run game or a shaky offensive line I mean just look at the teams and the records not the quarterback and realize that if he has a bad year So what he's had great years like last year that went for nothing because it is on the front office the coaching and the rest of the roster on whether you're gonna win or not..

So if he stays he stays if he leaves he leaves it's the state of the NFL I mean when players are moving around like they are and and finding success elsewhere why not Prescott?


I wouldn't say I would love it him for him to do that but the way the fan base treats him I was hoping Romo did the same thing Go leave go get success somewhere else go get that ring because they're good enough to get a ring they just been on teams that were not up to par here You know look what the Rams and the Eagles and the 49ers do for their teams to make sure they have a chance at a Super Bowl every year and that's not been the case here for Prescott and Romo They've been handed less than stellar contenders..

I thought that was Joe Milton maybe I was mixed up by all the love letters to Joe Milton when he got cut Yes no sarcasm i'm being facetious but why not bring him back He he might be the heir apparent but he needs to be patient and come back and further develop That's what the Cowboys wanted They know they're not ready to get rid of Prescott he's got another two to 3 seasons here likely I don't think they're gonna draft one I don't think they're like the Rams where they're gonna waste a draft pick when they know it might be three or four years from now when Prescott hangs it up but a guy like Joe Milton if he was smart would come back to the practice squad would play his way into QB2 next year and who knows 2028 maybe he is the guy that least attempts to take Dax place I mean that is what people are saying in here the Cowboys were stupid for releasing him, He is young enough he has mobility has a big enough arm Why not Joe Milton the Cowboys need to go woo him back to the practice squad..

It doesn't necessarily have to be a QB in the top 10. Let's not forget that Lamar Jackson was picked late in the 1st, and it wouldn't be someone that'd be starting right away. If we were to pick a QB round one, theyd probably sit for a year or two, which would actually be of great value too.

Dak is as loaded as any season he has been in. He is officially in an out of excuses season. In fact, if dallas fails to be in the nfc championship or SB, the FO really should start talking about his replacement, and in his 30s, there is no reason to talk about how dak needs more time. Dak has had a lot of time, what is dak like 33?

It's either dak does it now, or prepared to start discussing how his future drafted replacement can.

I don't think Milton is consistent enough. I'd love for him to go on the PS, but I see Milton as kind of a Josh Dobbs with a cannon.

I don't think for a minute we will get Archie. But I could see someone like Sellars being a good enough QB to justify being a late 1st round pick.

I think the 2027 season will be his most important.

I know some fans believe this season is the one we get to the big dance but the odds are severely stacked against this because going from the 30th ranked defense to top 10 isn't realistic.

2027 should realistically be the season we may make that leap IF the defense makes measurable strides.

As to Rayne, I merely want to see a solid season with NO major Injuries but I don't see him as the QB that can overcome a potentially middle of the league defense

If the defense can be decent...it will such a relief. We should be rid of THAT excuse...and can evaluate Dak's true value to this team.

I do NOT want to hear "Dak is the least of our problems with this awful defense!" He was and so was that defense!

Having said that...of COURSE Dak has value. I'm talking about for the ultimate prize. Is he the leader some say? Is he the top QB some say? Can he be a driving force for a strong playoff team without excuses?

Exactly, and it's why I think, even if we're picking say pick 25, I could see Jerry taking someone line Sellers from South Carolina or a CJ Carr of Notre Dame to sit behind Dak to develop.

Not sure I’d agree most important yet but the OP has some good points.

A down year this season may force the cowboys to look at a true succession plan. I doubt they could realistically dump Dak within the next couple of years, but if Dak shows signs of decline they may look to eat some of his cap instead of pushing it out into void years and possibly drafting a qb in the first couple of rounds.

On the flip side another year of him being in all pro conversations may actually have the cowboys exploring extension possibilities with him.

Very big year for Dak but this is a 4th round rookie who has taken multiple contract negotiations to the extreme and played on the tag. He’s had much more to lose early in his career than he does now.

Not really, Mahomes was taken pick 15 and sat for a year. Jordan Love and Rodgers say for at least two years before starting, despite being taken round 1. Lamar Jackson sat a year before taking over. Sometimes it's best to actually take a QB round 1 and let them sit a year or two. Make sure they have time to actually develop, and they can actually learn a lot from Dak in one year. So, to me, I think you actually can justify, especially with the cap space we should have next year, letting a QB develop behind Dak for a year or two while taking them in the 1st round.

Exactly, and with the team we have, I'm all for taking a QB round one and letting them sit for a year. When you have a vet QB like Dak, you can justify sitting the replacement for a year to learn.
