When Did You Buy into Camden Brown Making the 53-Man Cut?

This topic asks if you believe he earned his opportunity. What he actually does with his opportunity from this moment on is not the question.

I bought in after what I saw him do in the preseason Seahawks game. Practice does not sell me. What a player does or does not do in a simulated game, even against backups, matters to me. At minimum, for wide receivers and tight ends, I want to see receptions caught within the player's catch radius. High/low passes. Throws placed in front and behind. Adjusting by jumping or diving for the ball. Fighting successfully for positional advantage against their defender.

A wide receiver's number one responsibility is catching catchable passes because no quarterback will ever throw perfect passes 100% of the time. It is still their job to haul in catchable passes, not the quarterback's.

I watched Michael Irvin coaching up Brown in @Xizor's thread. Irvin has always been supportive of any Cowboys player he has ever met. He has always lent his expertise to anyone. Irvin advises defensive players on what they should be looking for. That is the kind of guy he is.

What Irvin does not do is overhype the potential he sees in a young receiver. He knows what it takes. Irvin sees All-Pro potential in Brown. He likely bought in well before I did.

After the second preseason game, I thought he deserved a spot, but thought if he disappeared in the third, he might lose it. They didn't use him much in the third game, though, and he still made a play before they took him out.

The first preseason game sold me. It's clear the Cowboys see the same potential Irvin does. You don't expose a player they feel can be an integral part of the future to waivers and risk losing him.

Brown started his college career at Auburn but for whatever reason he hardly played there. He transferred to Georgia Southern and caught 14 TD passes last season. But since he didn't exactly carve up great defenses he went undrafted. This could be one of those Miles Austin type UDFA finds for the Cowboys. Yes, he will probably be declared inactive for most of the season, but I can't wait to see what his future will look like.

Irvin talks a ton. He is a natural cheerleader.

I have no data. My assumption is completely unscientific. I would challenge anyone to find more written or audio quotes of Michael Irvin describing average or fair players as having All-Pro potential than of players who ended up very good or great.

Machota was on Cowboys Collective podcast and said that past WR darlings were making plays around once a week, but Brown has been doing this every day and then the preseason games. He acknowledged that fans didn't see many of his plays in camp because when he was getting reps was usually when they were sending out their videos on social media.

Once I saw him in preseason it came across to me that the media kind of underyped him during camp because of the lack of his clips. But knowing he did it every day and then the first preseason game it was pretty obvious they found something.

The game against Seattle. I started to believe. As that and the TC practice talk.
However I held off. We seen this too many times before.

After the Arizona game. I put him on my 53. And they would somehow find a way to keep 6 WR.

Even at that going into the Saints game. I wanted to see more. Just to be sure. However I wanted to see more from Mingo as well. But he did not dress. And was not disappointed on Browns performance in the Saints game.

after first preseason game, I knew there was something to this kid....and if he gets the mentorship and training, could be a very good possession reciever for years to come.

Measurables and potential have their place in scouting, but often they're prioritized too much. The Indiana coach said a big turning point for him and his coaching success was when he stopped prioritizing potential when assessing players and, instead, started prioritizing production.

I'm still not "sold," per se. There are quite a few more steps to clear facing a step-up in competition if he's going to be this all-world receiver folks are hyping him to be. Honestly, I'd settle for him being a money-found, reliable #3 vs. an All-Pro. Great job going from UDFA to making the team his first season but let's see how he responds having a log jam in front of him and not playing much for an entire season. Will he stay hungry and be ready once his number (might be) is called?

As for the thread question, even Seattle broadcasters knew of him in camp so when he started making plays, I knew the Cowboys were going to have to think about shuffling things if they wanted to keep him.

For me, it was definitely a Seahawks game, I thought it was Pickens for a moment because you can’t tell who’s on the field

In the Cardinals game when the pocket broke down and Milton scrambled and Brown saw it and helped his QB out and took 60 some yards. I was thinking “this is an undrafted WR?”.

When the room after Turpin was an entire group of guys who could be cut, he was the first one to step up and he did it in an emphatic way on a national stage.

Whether he gets more than 30 targets this year is a real debate, but I’m hopeful that if he gets in the field, he will at least look like he belongs in the NFL.
