Which is exactly why I don’t buy the “they need to gel” excuse. NFL defenses are rarely healthy. Even when they are they’re rotating guys in and out. Either you’re good or you’re not. If you’re not you need to make changes, not just give it time.

Sounds like this type system takes awhile to gel. Saints defense was bad last year for half a season then they were real good.

Maybe…without doing a true deep dive into the situation it does look like the schedule may have been a stronger reason for the turnaround though. That and actually getting competent QB play once they put in Shough.

New #Cowboys CB Joey Porter Jr is in the building and will be practicing today with the team. Coordinators take the podium at 11:50 CT so we will get the chance to ask DC Christian Parker how they see Parker fitting into this scheme. Calling around the league, other DCs tell me this is an absolute upgrade for Dallas. Porter is a big, long press-man corner who is comfortable getting his hands on receivers, disrupting routes at the line and making receivers work just to get into their route. If he stays patient with the feet and doesn’t lunge, I was told his length becomes extremely difficult to deal with.As someone put it to me there are several ways to play man with corners in cover 3. There are also a lot of ways to play man within zone coverages.One other told me look to Patrick Surtain III and JC Horn’s use in their respective systems as some sense of how he will be used. Cowboys have not ruled him out for Sunday but will need to see how he looks in practice this week. More to come throughout the day

I’m also told they talked to Porter at the combine as a prospect. Given the fact, they both seem comfortable playing this one out this means the Cowboys still, in theory, have money to make another move if Jerry is feeling dangerous. At the end of this season remember Dallas could still tag him at a lower number than his rumored 30M ask or if he walks get a 3rd round compensatory pick. At this point, the premium pick to focus on is the 2nd round in 2028. And on the pushback that why would Pittsburgh trade him then? They weren’t going to pay him and like George Pickens sometimes a change of scenery helps.

We traded for a cb who has a “Micah” back injury / contract hold in - without a new contract as of yet and we expect him to possibly play on Sunday ?
Am I missing something here?
No off season conditioning from what I understand
Not in football playing shape with lack of reps
He’s all of the sudden going to jump out on the field and play like an all star??
From what I have read in past few hours the new contract may not even happen w Dallas ?
So first - why would / should he play with no new deal?
What’s the risk of rushing him out there and ending up actually hurt ?
I don’t see this as an immediate fix for what ails Dallas at all but more of a long term fix possibly if a deal is reached ?
Why the urgency ?
I like that Jerry did something just for the sake of doing something but still need edge help

He participated in training camp.
If he plays im sure it will be specific situations and on a pitch count.

He is better than any 4th or 5th cb we have on roster who are starting due to injury.

This isn't difficult.

I actually like the Porter trade although I believe he will be a 14 game rental. Porter makes the team instantly better. The NFC East is week. I am glad the Joneses are going for it this year.
