Did the Cowboys overpay for Porter?

The gist of what I saw a lot of yesterday is he's good not top tier, and the contract situation. This is part of the article that seemed to be making the rounds yesterday:

"Many around the league believed Dallas overpaid, based largely on the belief that teams don’t view Porter as a top-tier corner. The Cowboys have a strong recent history of overpaying for talent: a fourth for Trey Lance, a fourth for receiver Jonathan Mingo, a fifth for Joe Milton, a fourth for Rashan Gary.

“They were bidding against themselves for Porter,” says one executive with a team that was erroneously tied to trading for the cornerback. "
I can understand the part in bold. That's a solid opinion. Just not the part about Porter not being a top tier CB. Ok, he's not. No one is giving you a top tier corner for a 2nd round pick two years from now. Dallas didn't pay for a top tier Corner. So why make that dumb comment? I don't mean you, just those that said it.

The other trades, a 4th for him and a 5th for that guy, irrelevant. They're just shots in the dark using crap picks. Who cares about a 5th rounder? Take shots all you want with day 3 picks.

I wouldn't say its an overpay, but I think there is more uncertainty around JPJs ability to truly be a massive impact for this team. I keep hearing that hes a top 10 corner and will just shut down Nico Collins today. I'd really roll back expectations. This is a player who is a good but not great CB that really hasnt played any football this year, even in practice. There is a very real chance that JPJ gives us more of an average CB performance than some realize. There is certainly a ceiling for more, but weve gone from taling about how we need to be patient with this group of defenders because this scheme takes a while to learn to JPJ is the answer all too quick.
What's the source claiming top 10?

Analysts and PFF have him in the 13-20 range.

Overall I do not think this was a bad trade, or anywhere near one. But in the end, it will all depend on how he plays. If he helps us out a lot, no one is going to care about the 2nd round pick 2 years from now.

And the big one, if he resigns w/ us.

Yes, he's solid. But, to repeat the question, do you want Porter or Pickens?
Defense wins championships.

We can let Pickens go then draft Omarion Miller from Arizona State or Ryan Wingo from Texas. We'd have our new drafty for five years before re-signing him. By that time Lamb will be on his last legs.

I don't like the Porter trade right now, but I hope his play changes my mind.

And then what do we do if we don't have a good edge rusher?

That’s being mentioned cause it’s not as likely we’d resign both.

Too early to tell IMO. This season results will better determine.
I don't see any way we sign both Pickens AND Lamb top 5 contracts ...........something they both are going to demand. This is why I'm saying this isn't Porter vs Pickens.........

This situation has nothing to do with Porter.
** Pickens will likely want $40M to sign
** Lamb only has $7M guaranteed money left on his contract after this season. He will need new money in 2027

A B grade is what I gave them also.

However, did it claim he's top 10?
I'm done K.........lol
One post you had him at 10-15 and another post you dropped him 15th........I posted a tweet with several of his solid stats inside the top 10. You don't like or trust the trade, cool. I do... let's leave it there.

And you're wrong They didn't want to pay him he was holding out They took what they could get for him You're trying to tell me that George Pickens is not a top tier receiver and we only gave a 3rd for him or was it a second either way that's a top tier wide receiver I mean yes it does happen when money is involved and they know they don't wanna spend the money then they're going to try to get what they can out of a guy so don't tell me you can't When I see Howie Roseman does this stuff all the time and you guys boot lick him i'm tired of the boot licking if this was done by the Eagles like just let's say the Cowboys passed on giving up a second for him but the eagle swooped in and did it you would be applauding it that is what you guys do you're trying to say Jerry didn't get a good deal he got a great deal this is a great deal now is he gonna play great here I don't know he is a top tier corner he just isn't top 5 because he doesn't put up enough stats he's one of those quiet guys you know steady does his job right you know like Kevin Smith and Larry Brown You remember them or Brandon Carr There are some dudes in this league that just do their job he doesn't give up a lot of big plays he doesn't give up touchdowns one touchdown since his rookie year in three years he's only giving up one touchdown..

So he doesn't live in the spotlight like a Dion Sanders or do the one off like bland and digs having one great year because they were able to take risk well he don't take the risks that doesn't make not top tier he is one of the better cover corners there's a difference between a cover corner like a power back versus a scat back or a guy with a lot of speed There are differences in players but that does not make them less of a player they just are different you won't see them giving you those excited jump up and clap and get crazy as a fan base and run out and buy his jersey that does not make him less of A player..

So I just want to make sure you understand that you can get a deal sometimes from teams that are frustrated with the player and don't plan on paying him so they took what they thought was a very good pick.

I think both sides got what they needed...

He is a top 10 corner I mean easily because he's a cover corner he don't get all the accolades people are not running out to buy his jerseys because he's not taking high risk trying to play hero ball and get interceptions he's not a ball hawk the dude just does his job in covers he's got a crazy wingspan this is one of those big outside corners that we've been looking for for a while that plays physical he tackles he stays glued to his guy and yeah sometimes he gets penalties but because he's not a rah rah interception stacked up stack guy that somehow he's being degraded and that's ridiculous.

That is why I say let's just see how he plays here but the big difference here is like a power back that just gets The Dirty yards and does his job like Williams our guy not going to get all the accolades he just has quiet days at the office he brings in his lunch pail does his job had one of the better seasons last year even though he got disrespected like this before he actually played a game for the Cowboys and then showed everyone what he can do.

But sure the guy breaking plays and having a similar year in production but looks much prettier he's fast look he spins he hurdles people blah blah blah that is the difference here fans are wanting the rah rah and when they don't see it they degrade a player.

He just signed new deal last year. Jethro isn’t going to give him a 3rd contract 2 years early. Book it !!

And the big one, if he resigns w/ us.
The Cowboys don't know what they're doing signing players. I don't know what their mindset is, but it has nothing to do with the cap. They like to lowball players, but then pay out top dollar. They do nothing in regard to the cap. As if it doesn't matter.

And you're wrong They didn't want to pay him he was holding out They took what they could get for him You're trying to tell me that George Pickens is not a top tier receiver and we only gave a 3rd for him or was it a second either way that's a top tier wide receiver I mean yes it does happen when money is involved and they know they don't wanna spend the money then they're going to try to get what they can out of a guy so don't tell me you can't
Pickens was discounted due to behavioral concerns, no one really doubted his abilities. He put up high end WR stats in Pittsburgh too.

I think it is fair to question how good the league views JPJ....CBs have gone for way more in recent trades for top guys. A 2nd rounder two years out is relavtively cheap for high end production, if thats what the Cowboys receive.

I don't have a major issue with the value the Cowboys gave up in the trade. I do have concerns about how close the Cowboys are to competing for a championship and if this move puts them into true conention though.

You responded to me, but not about anything I said. I think Pickens is a top tier WR.
