Dak Prescott has a career regular-season record of 22-25 (.468) against teams that enter the game with a winning record.

Tony Romo had a regular-season record of 19-32 against teams with a winning record (above .500) and an 8-10 record against teams that finished at .500.

So for all of the guys touting how Romo was a much more capable QB, this stat shows the falsehood in that statement. They are pretty much the same QB. Both are known to put up good numbers yet crack in high pressure moments in big games against above average competition.

Just for the sake of comparison

Tom Brady 74–47
Highest number of wins against winning teams in NFL history.

Patrick Mahomes 22–12 (or ~64.7%)
One of the highest win percentages against winning competition in the modern era.

Lamar Jackson 14–4
Strong track record against winning teams, including standout single-season marks.

Not defending either player but that type of stat is very misleading as there are two flaws with it.

1) you need to not count the Cowboys games so that means NFC East opponents could potentially have 2 losses and other teams 1 loss they wouldn't have had that season if they had not played the Cowboys

2) to form a real comparison between quarterbacks, you need to track the record at the time the respective teams of those quarterbacks played their opponents, not their season record.

There are many examples where teams had winning records when the Cowboys played them yet they ended up losing their quarterback and losing several games after the Cowboys game.

Here's my opinion...

Neither are home run hitters. Meaning they can't frequently hit the WR, in stride, up the sideline. So their offenses have to drive the length of the field every possession.
2025 Struggles: Prescott received a 51.1 red-zone grade (dropping to 36.7 against specific red-zone coverages), as the offense frequently stalled and settled for field goals instead of touchdowns.

This is an interesting topic and rabbit hole to go down. There’s been talk about how if Dak is not on the team then we’ll be back to the Quincy Carter days. I’ve come to realize we haven’t recovered from the Aikman retirement and we’re still in the post Aikman rebuild. I like Dak and I like Romo but there’s some things I want to throw out.

Quincy Carter only came one win away from the peak of the Romo and Dak years. Carter lead this team to the playoffs and lost in the WC round. Dak and Romo have won a WC game. Hence Dak and Romo only got us one game closer to the success we want than Carter did.

Both Dak and Romo have great end of half and end of game stats but quarters 1-3 they put us in a bad position and have inflated stats to try and pull us out.

Dak and Romo both have quantitative stats showing they did not perform well against higher tier teams and qualitative data to back up the stats, this adding to fan frustration and polarizing both QBs.

Both are limited in their game.

Both have incredible back stories that make them very likable.

My belief is Dak and Romo are not that much better than Carter but are more marketable, likable, and have inflated stats that present themselves as fools gold. Dak and Romo have been good enough for us to not completely rebuild and sell out and get a top tier draft QB prospect but have been enough to keep us hovering around .500 and bad playoff performances.

I don’t think we ever left the Quincy Carter Clint Stoerner “Stone Age” of QBs and franchise futility, we just have a guys that we like better than the immediate guys that played QB after #8 retired.

Brady and Mahomes are GOATs and Lamar Jackson is pretty much in the same classification as Dak and Romo, so I don't know if you should have used Lamar to make your point, but I have one good question to ask you.

Which GMs or coaching staff did Romo or Dak have that was comparable or better than the GMs or coaching staffs that Brady, Mahomes and Jackson had?

That makes a huge difference.....

So Romo and Dak are not Lamar, Mahomes or Brady. Amazing revelation!
Maybe compare them to QBs of similar talent? Also, I may be wrong, but Maybe Romo and Dak would have been a little better if playing for those teams in Baltimore, NE, and KC.

This is exactly why Dak doesn't deserve $60 mil a season

I agree the contract is too high, but it’s probably only about 5 mil AAV - if it was in the 55mm range he would be paid very comparably to his peer set.

We’re talking about less than a 10% overpayment and the reality is it’s probably more like a 5% overpayment- call it the Jerry stupidity premium.
