New Cowboys senior defensive assistant Mike Pettine on how he can help Christian Parker as a first-time DC: “I think I can help a lot. It’s funny, I have a big, about 4-inch thick book of what not to do, and a very thin one of what to do.

“I think that’s key, is learning from others’ mistakes. As much as you think you’re prepared for it, you’re really not until you get into it. And I think that’s where I’ll be able to help.”

Mike Pettine explained to me the entire process from the spring to now that led him to finally accept the #Cowboys offer as SDA.

Pettine will be in the booth.
He will also be involved with helping Christian Parker form weekly game plans
He turned 60 on 09/25, and also had shoulder surgery and a back procedure he wanted to get healthy from first

Pettine’s full answer to me re: April to now:

“Yeah, I mean, we had a good discussion in the spring. And I actually came down here and visited, spent some time here during OTA's.. Yeah, it was tough, but it was something that I kind of decided that, last year, that I was gonna step away for a little bit, and I knew it was something that would be an opportunity then.

“And it was just something where there was just too much stuff going on — from a family standpoint. I just kind of wanted to get away for a little bit.

“I was fortunate with my wife and I were able to get overseas to Italy, and that's when I got the first phone call from CP.

“We were eating or drinking away through Italy, so. it wasn't easy to [think about] ... Plus, we just welcomed our fifth grand baby.

“It’s been a busy week, but when somebody you care about reaches out — I just felt I needed to answer the call.

“I'm just trying to hit the ground, running here, and I feel like I'm trying to sip water from a fire hose, but trying to get caught up on all the film, and make observations here and there.

“I'm just here to support [Parker], both him and Schotty, and the rest of the defensive staff, in any way I can.”

Some time knowing not what to do works as well as knowing what to do.

I had to laugh upon seeing what Pettine said about "sipping water from a firehose" to get caught up.

Evidently, he'll be sitting up there in the booth with CP, trying to include his scheme, along with his own.

What I find slightly odd is that BS knows Pettine very well from their time at the Jets, but doesn't seem to have a close relationship with him as the reason MP is here is because of CP. BS also reveals they approached 2 other coaches first before MP, but were turned down. Who would they have been? Pete Carroll might have been one?
