Executive vice president Stephen Jones said the cap issues will be similar to last year, but unlike last season he doesn’t anticipate the Cowboys using a franchise tag on a player.

“I don’t think the tag’s going to be in play for us this year,” Jones said. “Obviously, we worked it out where we could with Spencer. I just don’t see it where we need it this year.”

“Bailey’s restricted so he’s, for all practical purposes, not going anywhere,” Jones said. “But our goal is to get him signed to a long-term deal. We’re actually in pretty serious talks with him, so optimistic about that.”

Cuts & Restructures

Nothing’s been finalized yet regarding pay cuts, cuts and restructures for many of the Cowboys as the team looks for ways to get under the cap.

This may be a sore subject, but after not playing at all last season what would it realistically take to resign Spencer? I know we are in a terrible situation with our cap, but what would it cost?

I could see either a modest amount over the minimum for 1 year where they can release him prior to the season if the knee just didn't respond.(with the club not responsible for the prior injury)

or

Vet minimum deal with some incentives if he plays well.

Spencer will sign a modest one year deal. He wants big money in free agency and he will not get it coming off microfracture. He can play one year and if he plays well get his big contract next year.

I think Spencer can get better then low pay maybe not top dollar but not minimum.

A lot depends on how his recovery from micro fracture surgery has gone.

My understanding is a lot of this comes down to whether or not his body regenerates the cartilage in his knee. It a somewhat hit or miss thing.

I don't see Spencer signing a Vet Minimum or even a deal close to that and sticking with the team. I could see him signing something, getting released and pulling a Rat where he then goes and signs with a team for a much bigger deal and just pocketing the money we would give him. I could see us seeing him this next season, playing for another team.

Maybe he'll change his name to Tony Spencer.

The thing is..

with Spencer..he has to now play a DE spot.

I don't think he's made for that anymore than Ware is.

B/w this..I'd just not resign him now..

I think you go ahead and draft a DT with our # 1 selection in the draft..

..then DE with our #2

and then a LBr #3..

and a safety #4..

and fix the freaking defense.

I'm hoping to see a jailbrake on defense next year with rookies predominantly.

bailey is a RFA so he is going nowhere. he is about to get a nice raise whether we sign him or tender him. but the only way he leaves is someone giving us a very high pick to sign him and we have the option of matching their deal so in reality he can't go anywhere

I think so too. I think the injury actually greatly increases the chances of him playing in Dallas next year.

Now how effective he'll be, I don't know.

First, we trade up for Manziel at the #7 spot. Then we use our 3rd rounder (2nd and next year's 1st is gone) for the best available DT. :D

i'm shocked they wouldn't consider the franchise tag for Hatch...seems like a perfect time to use it.

Always a big risk to use that on a disgruntled player, not too mention trying to afford it.
