Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins: Dallas players are the problem; Cowboys defense won’t be any better

Malcolm Jenkins has not yet played a game in the NFC East. The veteran safety signed a three-year, $16.25 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles last month.

But he isn’t wasting any time taking shots at his new NFC East rivals, particularly the Dallas Cowboys.

During a Monday night appearance on NFL Network, the former New Orleans Saint didn’t seem concerned with the Cowboys defense improving upon it’s historically bad season a year ago.

“A couple years ago, their scapegoat was Rob Ryan, and they got rid of him, and he was the cause of all their problems,” Jenkins said, according to Philly.com Eagles writer Jimmy Kempski. “He went to New Orleans and took the worst defense in NFL history and turned them into a top 5 defense. So he couldn’t have been the problem.”

Jenkins, the 14th overall pick in 2010, mentioned how the losses of standout defensive linemen DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher aren’t going to help a defense that ranked last in the league. After all, he watched his Saints offensive teammates torch the Cowboys defense for an NFL record 40 first downs during a 49-17 victory in November.

“I had the best seat in the house when I watched the Saints get 40 first downs in one game. Forty. In one game,” Jenkins said. “So it must be the players.”

Well duh. I saw the exact same thing in person Mr. Jenkins. And my seat was several rows up from field level.

When your core of talented players are on the sidelline or hobbled, and the rest are hobos, would you expect something different? Ryan's last year in Dallas wasn't all that dissimilar. He had an bloody laceration right up the gut of his Dallas defense to work with. We have made a few moves this offseason to improve the defense. The improvements must continue during the draft. Everything will not get fixed in 2014, but efforts have already begun for addressing the player problem.

It is the players on defense.

That said, we were decimated in the NO game. We're not just removing the two best players from that unit and trotting them out. We're adding several, and then losing two. Plus the draft.

Defense is still going to be a weakness, though. And PHI is going to be getting better, not worse.

No more hopes with good character, stick to the talent already. But they are comfortable? Too freakin bad. sign some talent already. No more construction wokers we like bc they are fast and have a fake "rip move" when they are held up with the runner. How do you not catch on this desperation move? He is getting shown up, so he acts like he has position to strip.

Great post - right on the money!!

He's not wrong. It IS the players.

But it's funny he's talking so prematurely. Draft still hasn't happened.

That's what happens when you have no talent on defense and poor drafting over the past few years.
