If the Patriots are interested in QBs and they have Brady, why don't we?

I don't understand. If the Patriots will what? They have scouted players including QBs. The Cowboys have done the same. I believe every team has as well.

Now if we are assuming that the Pats absolutely will draft a QB in the first round(I don't think they will) there is still a big difference in their situation and the one the Cowboys face. The Pats pick 29th while Dallas is at 16th. That is a smaller investment to put into one of this years QB prospects. Brady will be 37 when the season starts while Romo will be 33. Statistically, Brady just came off one of his worse seasons in recent years while Romo had one of his better statistical seasons. That Pats also have fewer holes to fill at this point, so they have more flexibility to draft a QB in the first. Dallas have many different areas they need to focus on to improve the team, so they don't have as big of an option to draft a QB early.

Again I don't understand the premise of the thread.

Careful...applying this type of logic to yet another I'll-intentioned thread can frowned upon around here.

It's a reasonable question but the age pressure is a bit different. Maybe we are looking.

I don't think there is a "maybe". Dallas is looking. They are scouting, interviewing and evaluating the QBs in this draft. That doesn't mean they will grab one or take one in the first. Same situation with the Pats. They are looking as well, but it may not result in them drafting a QB.

Due diligence by one of the most professional Teams in the World of sports the New England Patriots and they have two Starting QBs with Ryan Mallet waiting in the wings.

The 2014 Draft is ripe for picking a Franchise QB....Belichick is a true football guy so he realizes some things wanna-be football guys fail to see.

It doesn't matter. It boils down to the same arguments.

Nobody is whinning. It is Easter morning and we don't have a lot to talk about regarding our boys. Just thought I would throw out the idea that it may be time to start thinking of grooming a qb for say the next three or four years. I am not a big fan of Orton. Think he is just good enought to look OK and lose. I would rather have kept Tanney. He hs upside and could have lost the last game just like Orton. Weeden is a good pick up, maybe the chnange of scenery will help him. I see no positives in spending cap money on Orton. Niice guy, let him get paid by another team to carry the clip board. I believe the last three Qbs we actually drafted were Quincy Carter and Clint Stormer. Time again to invest in the most important position on the team. If it were me, I would try and move up for Manziel. I think he has IT.

They've been very fortunate to have found Brady.

They also invested a draft pick in Mallett, whom they are about to lose after this season after not getting a single meaningful snap out of him, if they don't trade him to someone (smart money says they will trade him) and they need to fill that void.

I think the team is just covering their bases with Orton. Tony's back situation is shaky at best right now. I don't think they trust or even really know what they have in Weeden at the moment. I've got no problems with keeping Orton for the time being. The guy can win you a couple of football games if Tony is out for a a couple of games.

I do agree that we need to start grooming someone (Weeden is already to old for that) and it seems the Cowboys have shown quite a bit of interest in quite a few QBs this off-season. No need to panic just yet.

I don't think it has anything to do with Jerry's philosophy on QBs per se, it's the fact that in any given year this team has a dozen gaping holes to fill and can't "waste" a top pick on QB. If we drafted better and had a team atmosphere conducive to winning then they would be In a position to draft a QB even when they've got a starter. The situation has changed though, in that Romo is close to retiring and the team can't rationalize the thought that they have a shot at contending. They will be considering a QB soon if not this year.

When comparing the Cowboys and Patriots - I trust what NE is doing 10 out of 10 times.

Flip is around to the 90's, I bet their fans said the same of them vs. the Cowboys deciions.
It's all relevant to the times. People say they are successful in what ever they do, because the are winning. But how successful have their drafts really been?
I don't, just asking if they were, or just perceived that way.

Winning cures all.
If the Cowboys have a decent draft, but doesn't go the way most fans think or have hoped. And believe me, people will complain, because they didn't go the sexy pick in every round. Anyway, they will complain we didn't do anything to get to the playoffs.
However, if the Cowboys go on and win the division, win a playoff game, the same people will say what a great draft, as well as the previous drafts, those players took a few years, but worked out.

If you hit on a franchise QB, you can be set for a very long time. Manziel is that guy. He is a gifted athlete, has incredible instincts, has been successful at the highest level and probably has room to grow, especially in reading defenses. Go up and grab this guy.
Roger says we should and I agree.

Many who are sky high on Manziel are failing to see the real depth at the position. There may be 8-10 QBs in the Draft that are rated just as good or better than a Johnny Football.

hasn't anyone considered the differences in the two teams' ROSTERS?!

the only quarterbacks currently on the new england roster are tom brady, who is about to turn 37, and ryan mallett, whom they are supposedly shopping FOR A HIGH DRAFT PICK.

on the cowboys' roster are tony romo, former quality starter kyle orton, and THE GUY THEY JUST BROUGHT IN FOR INSURANCE, brandon weeden.

so, if you want to know why the patriots are looking into drafting a quarterback with a high draft pick in this draft, and the cowboys aren't, you don't need to jump to the conclusion that there's a problem with our general manager. the much simpler answer is that the patriots NEED to consider drafting a quarterback with a high pick next month, and the cowboys don't.

Teddy Bridgewater has fallen into the second round thanks to his less than stellar pro day and his teenaged wonderlic score. Not saying we nab him in the second.. just sayin. I still like the following QBS in order of preference and hope one of them ends up wearing the star after this draft.

  1. Johnny Manziel (will light up the NFL.. would love the see that happen regularly at AT&T Stadium)
  2. Blake Bortles (big strong QB. Reminds me of a more mobile version of Big Ben)
  3. Derek Carr (coming out with something to prove. Has all the skills to be successful at the next level)
  4. Teddy Bridgewater (can't let a bad pro day define a draft strategy. If you look at the whole, this guy is going to make his mark in the NFL... and it won't be on a clipboard)
  5. AJ McCarron (I don't care for Bama but can admit that this guy was the picture of consistency at a very high college level)
  6. Jimmy Garoppolo (he's from Tony's alma mater..lol)
  7. Logan Thomas (coming off a disappointing year.. can be had in the later rounds)

What about Murray?? If I can't have JFB Murray is the perfect consolation prize

We need at least four of those QBs going in the top 15 or our targets will be off the board. I hate seeing all these QBs falling in the newer mocks.Seems every team wants to draft what we need the most.

One thing you can be sure about with the Patriots is that anything released in the media should be viewed as nothing more than a smokescreen, as opposed to what they are going to do in the draft. They took Tebow out to dinner in 2010 too.

I heard they fed him chicken livers and everyone else got steak.

Not the first one of the other QBs offer the entertainment factor that Johnny Football and Jerry is in the entertainment business. He would make this team fun to watch during the 8-8 seasons.
