What must Cowboys see from Randy Gregory to make him a starter on the defensive line?

Gregory was outstanding in training camp. He consistently stood out in practice and picked up a sack in each of his three preseason games. That carried over into the regular season opener against the New York Giants when he had three quarterback pressures in the first half.

But Gregory suffered a high ankle sprain in the third quarter of that game that forced him to miss the next four weeks. He wasn't nearly as effective when he returned. Gregory failed to record a sack in his rookie season but did record 16 quarterback pressures — fourth on the team — in limited duty. He had just 11 tackles.

Gregory is an undersized defensive end who depends on speed to be successful. The high ankle sprain was a significant injury that impacted his burst and ability to make an impact as a rookie.

Gregory must sit out the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The penalty will take a little more than $143,000 out of his pocket and could threaten another $370,000 he has in guaranteed money...

......the ability to stay off the ganja. I watched him last year in camp and mentioned then that he would be a monster.

He has all the tools to play in this league for 10+ years, just needs to get his head right.

You know..

I think it would help if they started testing for drugs in college.

That's where the recreational drugs get traction..

nobody is checking there and the athletes are using pot for pain relief and recovery like the rest of us have a beer or scotch.

That goes un-noticed in our society generally unless that gets abused.

This generation has different ways of dealing with things.

Take Brett Farve and his painkiller addiction.

How often was he suspended for that?

Never.

So things are different now.

Has he added any bulk over the off-season? Maybe he was smoking last year to get the munchies?

Seeing him on the field instead of suspended would be a good starting point

What does Gregory have to show to be named a starter at DE?

That's easy, and it has nothing to do with smoking weed or not.
He has to be the best or second best DE on the team, which means he has to bring better pass rush that most of the other guys and hold up against the run on all downs. If he can't hold up against the run, he'll never be a starter; he'll be a pass rush specialist in the rotation. If he's the best or second best DE on the team, he'll be starting whether they trust him or not. Trust has nothing to do with starting or not starting. If anything, when you don't trust a guy, you want to get your money's worth out of him before he screws up. Trust has everything to do with whether or not he gets a second contract from the Cowboys, regardless of his starting status.

Things are different. I am not sure the NFL even has that big a of a problem with players smoking weed for pain and mental management. The issue is it is still an illegal drug, and they cannot turn a blind eye to it.

I am just awestruck at the stupidity of some athletes. Their athletic ability is a gift many people will never have and it opens doors for them to have a life people would kill for. And to throw it away for a momentary high.

The money Rolando just threw away could have paid for degrees for all his kids. Truly an incredibly stupid man.
