Along with the move to place Randy Gregory back on the suspended list (which I chose not to comment on) the Cowboys have used the space he freed up for La’el Collins potential return. Head coach Jason Garrett hinted at his return earlier in the week.

“[Collins has] worked very hard to come back,” Garrett said Monday, via Fort-Worth Star Telegram. “We’re going to give him every chance to do that. Whether he’ll be available to practice this week, I don’t know that right now. He’s working with our strength and conditioning coaches. He’s working with our trainers and our rehab guys really each and every day. We’ll see how he does over the course of this week.

"We’re certainly hopeful at some point he’ll be able to come back this season. We’ll just take his situation day by day.”

Ron Leary has done an amazing job in Collins absence and he will remain the atarter, but it never hurts to have a talented offensive lineman ready just in case...

This situation is interesting. I think they could have kept Collins on IR-practicing status for another 2 weeks but didn't and they signed OG Cooper. Neither one would normally be active on game day because Looney is the backup Center. I guess whatever kept Leary out off the field in the final game must be a concern.

When did we place Chaz Green on IR?

I would have liked him to come back also.

4 combo guards on the roster, plus Looney.

Something must be happening. Is Leary more hurt than they're leading on?

Is Collins potentially going to slide into the tackle position?

I don't know. The numbers just don't seem to add up at face value

Maybe with Collins and Cooper they will consider Martin being the active backup center?

It was Leary's back that acted up in December, so I would assume it's the same thing, unless I've missed my guess.

If nothing else they should have a nice jumbo short yardage package.

I can't help but wonder the same thing. Given these moves, does the team seriously consider making a concerted effort to play Collins at RT? The need is certainly there, given Free's obvious struggles and Chaz Green's unreliability health-wise.

Free's contract shoots up to a cost of roughly $7.5 million I think. That's obviously unmanageable and something needs to give.

Man, you guys will think I'm freakin' nuts, but.........I'd give Collins a try at DT next training camp.

He's got a mean streak to him. He's athletic as hell.

I mean he's is 6-4/ 320+..............

no crazier than I...lol...I was all for moving Larry Allen to DT.

Collins takes us back to the same active guys....only he will be the backup to Leary and Martin. Looney will backup Fred. Cleary will backup both tackles. I believe rosters are expanded a tad for the playoffs, aren't they?

Bottom line is that Cooper has nothing to do with this year's team. He's just a roster guy practicing and showing us what he's got for the offseason.

Ima go on a limb and say they're probably not going to replace their healthy starting RT of 10 seasons right before the playoffs with a young player just returned from IR for 10 weeks who's never played the position at this level.

It must mean that they think there could be an issue with Leary, and in turn with Collins. Not that we'd expect to make that many roster changes leading into the playoffs, but we're limited to 4 total, and this was one of them, so there probably is a reason for it beyond a player they liked at OG being available.

At first, I thought maybe they were looking at bringing Tapper in with Gregory going out and wanted insurance for Leary and so brought in Cooper to fill that role, but that doesn't look like that's what they're doing.

I was hoping for Tapper also.

Suffice it to say that this organization is extremely aware that our offensive line dominance must be maintained with top-notch talent and depth to ensure that their post-season aspirations are fulfilled. There's no doubt about how the OL is our key to success and will be this year and beyond. I'm delighted to see that they're doing what they can to fortify its continuing success. Back injuries are known to linger. I read that Leary has had one since December and suspect that this is largely behind our recent OL moves.
