Jerry McDonald, of the Oakland Tribune, reports the Oakland Raiders have decided not to retain special teams coach Joe Avezzano. The decision comes as no surprise, given owner Al Davis' observation that ''there is no question that while we had two of the prime kickers in the NFL, we still weren't there with our special teams," during the conference call announcing the firing of head coach Norv Turner.

Wow, I thought Avezzano was considered the best special teams coach in the NFL...at least when he was with the Cowboys.

Oh we better get him back. Since he was once here he must be one of the best coaches ever!

and when you pair him with Steve Hoffman you have an unbeatable superhero combination.

really the only good memories of his ST units all had to do with Deion Sanders doing amazing stuff. He must have been a good coach to get those performances out of Deion.

Yeah because he couldn't do it for any of the other teams he played for :D

He's been overrated for a long long time, but since he has a lot of face time on TV, all of a sudden, he's somebody.

Probably had something to do with the talent level of the players available to him...just a guess.

It's amazing what talented players will do for a coach isn't it!;)

He got good performances out of Kenny Gant, Vinson Smith, Tommy Agee, "Moose" Johnston and lots of others during his stint here... It's more about talent on hand.

i would say Avezzano is an average special teams coach, the thing i didnt like about him was he would go on these rampages on the sidelines as if he were the headcoach.

you'd be hard-pressed to find an ST coach that didn't get a handful of good performances out of players. Many of these guys played ST for at least 7 or 8 years before coming to the NFL.
