I think one falls under the personal conduct policy and the other is under the drug prevention policy. There has to be a difference somehow because otherwise the league is just being inconsistent again with the punishment it doles out.

Here is the NFL’s current schedule of penalties for marijuana positives.

1. First violation: Referral to a substance-abuse program.

2. Second violation: Fine equivalent to two game checks. (The player’s NFL team isn’t necessarily informed, as the punishment does not affect playing time).

3. Third violation: Fine equivalent to four game checks. (Again, the team isn’t necessarily informed).

4. Fourth violation: Four-game suspension.

5. Fifth violation: 10-game suspension.

6. Sixth violation: One-year banishment.

It's crazy how these guys secretly fail drug tests.. We find out when they strike out for the 3rd time. Smh

When you fail at the combine you automatically go into their drug program meaning that you start getting tested right away.


If he could've just shown up to the combine clean he could've probably stayed out of trouble and just failed the occasional test here and there and been ok.

was not aware a 4th strike for pot is when game suspensions kick in. One could argue the league is relatively lenient. I'm curious in what's involved in the league substance abuse program. And I'd think informing the team would help someone in getting treatment for substance abuse. Would also think the team would need to be made aware if the violation involves player compensation.

If you're continually failing tests that you know are forthcoming, I'd say you have a problem.

Thanks for posting. I have to admit, I was not fully aware of the escalating penalties. I believe someone else mentioned that this was perhaps more lenient than what you might expect in the corporate world. As a former senior-level manager with a Fortune 100 company, our policy was basically, three strikes and you are out. For the first offense, you were referred to a substance abuse program and were subject to random drug testing for 1 year. The second offense resulted in a mandatory substance abuse program, a hold on all promotions and pay raises for a year, and bi-monthly testing. The third offense was termination. The biggest difference though was privacy -- at no point was the immediate supervisory or manager consulted or made aware that the employee failed a drug test.

So how did he get the one game. Just curious is it for non marijuana and non peds
