Throwing Punches

I just saw a 49er throw a punch and hit the facemask of a Rams player, no flag. I saw a Giant punch a Lion in the helmet Monday night, no flag. And yet Jeremy Lane was ejected for half-punching (at worst) and not even making contact. I wonder if the refs made a recent decision to look the other way for punches or if they just call it on the teams they don't like. Zero consistency, as usual.

Refs suck.

The NFLPA should demand to get input to the Refs evaluation process when the next CBA comes up.

Was there a ref in the area? Could see it clearly? (I missed both games)
They may of had a talk about being more conservative on throwing a flag on that unless they clearly saw a punch?

It's only a penalty if they throw the flag.

I always get a kick out of the man who throws a punch at the face of a guy wearing a helmet. I would imagine the pain you feel landing this punch is almost punishment enough.

Refs were behind the players both times, and they both happened after the plays were over. Maybe after the controversy from the Lane ejection, they decided to let it go. It's nothing that hasn't happened routinely in post-play scrums forever, but it certainly violates Goodell's new "crackdown" on punches.

Refereeing has been a real issue now for the past 5-10 years and it's getting worse...
I don't think the refs are getting worse. I think technology, replay, challenges and the stupid rule book is really what's making refs seem terrible. It's easy to question these guys with today's technology

The officiating continues to be terrible. So inconsistent. The Steelers and Vikings game last week was almost unwatchable last week because of them. There were 4 penalties called on the Vikings that should of never been called. Then every other play, A flag. The calls really screwed the Vikings who were already screwed after Bradford didn't play. I'm not a Vikings fan but they didn't get a fair shake.

Officiating is always inconsistent and terrible. It's been that way forever. At this point you can only expect it to get worse and worse because there is absolutely no consequences for doing a poor job of officiating.

Yep. The Lane ejection was pure BS. Still waiting for an "oops we goofed" from the NFL on that one. But..... the problem is Lane has a deserved rep as being a hot head so the zebras are watching, and he needs to be aware if he's involved in a skirmish they are just waiting to throw the flag.

I think it goes back even farther than that. It just gets more attention now.
Officiating has been a 20 year problem. As a Seattle fan we have been on more than our share of craptastic calls. Super Bowl XL* (see the Bettis bowl), Testeverde's white helmet crosses the goal line it's a TD even though the ball is clearly at the 1.5 yard line . This year's Green Bay game where they blew/missed about 8 calls. Etc etc etc.

Seattle benefited on the "wail Mary" against GB when the replacements got the possession rule right contrary to popular belief, but missed the blatantly obvious offensive PI on Golden Tate.

The NFL doesn't want the officiating to get better, they like the ability to "steer" games to get what "desired results" are wanted at the time.
Why do you think all replay decisions go thru New York???

not defending them, as they can suck, but they are under a microscope...think of you own job; if you had 30 cameras watching everything that you are doing and someone else in your office could stand up and say "Pants is watching porn on his PC instead of working"...I might watch less porn

...assuming I watched porn - other than for educational review, of course....
