Defensive tackle is normally a rather lackluster position group, but man this year is exciting. As it stands I have five DT with a first round grade and many more with second and third round grades. My favorite thing about this DT class is the position flexibility. There are multiple guys who can play multiple positions in different schemes. Teams needs DT help are chomping at the bit to get to April ASAP.

Defensive Line

  1. Da’Ron Payne | Junior | 6’2″ 310lbs | Alabama
  2. Taven Bryan | Junior | 6’4″ 297lbs | Florida
  3. Maurice Hurst | Senior | 6’2″ 295lbs | Michigan
  4. Christian Wilkins | Junior | 6’4″ 300lbs | Clemson
  5. Vita Vea | Junior | 6’5″ 340lbs | Washington
  6. Justin Jones | Senior | 6’2″ 312lbs | N.C. State
  7. Harrison Phillips | Senior | 6’4″ 295lbs | Stanford
  8. Derrick Nnadi | Senior | 6’1″ 312lbs | Florida State
  9. Da’Shawn Hand | Senior | 6’4″ 290lbs | Alabama
  10. Rasheem Green | Junior | 6’4″ 280lbs | USC

So many choices. I so wish we rather did better or worse in record. I think the sweet spot on blue chips is around the top16 while getting the second tier in the position (defensively) is around 21-32. Taking the 2nd, 3rd, or even the 4th best at a position you find they are so close in quality that picking 29th will get you the same kind of talent as the 19th will. Not apposed to moving down a little if the right person we want is not there. I feel the top LB, FS, CB, DE, and DT will be gone. That is not to say the second tier is bad, just not the blue chip player that losing another game or so would have gotten. Let's take DT for an example since this is the OP's choice in this thread. Most will say Wilkens is the blue chip player. After that you have Vea and Hurst as the 1st rounders after that. Many mocks have Payne and Bryan as early second rounders that may or may not make the first round since we are still early in the predictions and still awaiting the Combine.

With that said do you take a second tier guy in the first. Let me ask you this, if Nnadi is there with our second pick, do you grab a Vea or a Hurst in the first? Do you move up early 2nd for Payne or Bryan? I could say this for each position for the most part. Just wish we did better or worse. Would have made things far easier.

Should be a good draft regardless. Hope we did our homework.

what is your take on Brian Price i know he went on IR but as I recall he was strong and had the right size.
We need a quality D1 I just wondering about others opinion on Price.

Three to four seasons ago, Marrinelli and staff, could turn a veteran defensive lineman into an actual producing part of the defense...and then they got too expensive to retain.
The last couple of seasons, the Cowboys have done generally worse in adapting journeymen to their programs. I have to look at current 'prospects' today, through a corrective lense to see real magic as a by product, although. Myself..

Price showed a little promise but his position will not show a lot of stats. Tech 1 is more of a run stopper that most hope to take on double teams. While he did a good job on run support, he didn't demand as much attention like Collins did. (though Collin's was playing his replacement) I know a 1 Tech is not considered a 1st round pick by our DC, but can you imagine a dominant 1 Tech that gets true double teams to block. Makes our squad of three 3 Techs really thrive. Still my favorite position to improve.......

Mine too but history tells us Marnelli has some strange disregard for the position.I think he prides himself as a alchemist.
There is some talent for DT in this draft

Not sure I spend a first on this group (though I like Wilkins a lot). Can I get a player just as good in 2nd or 3rd? Not sure I can't .....keep in mind, this is not a big stat position.

I'm surprised to see Justin Jones that high, him or B.J. Hill could be options in the later rounds.

My pet cat since last year has been DaRon Payne. Tell me you dont see Fletcher Cox when you watch him play !
Now, could we get Marrinelli to sign off on him in the 1st.?
Probably not, but the thought does make my mouth water .....

We need to be smart, instead of signing someone like Thorton. Who interests you at 1 tech that is set to be a free agent?
Poe, Logan, Ellis.

Kyle Williams is old but has been healthy most of his career.

Both Poe and Logan played on 1-year, 8M deals in 2017.

Payne is a 6 2" 315 2 down 1tech who'll take up double teams in the run game but his 5 sacks in 3 years suggest he ain't gonna provide much in the pass rush.
Cox is a 6 4" 295 3tech that plays the run or pass equally well and with a lot of anger.
Think a better comparison to Payne would beBrandon Mebane with the Seahawks a few years back!
