What it actually probably means is that they wanted to keep Eberflus at all costs short of forcing Marinelli to retire early. They want him as their DC in waiting, assured him that position was his (which probably also meant making the case that the HC is firmly in place), but that they couldn't offer him anything more than that #2 defensive coaching position with the Cowboys right now. Of course he'd take the number 1 coaching job elsewhere.

As a sidenote, this also seems to suggest Fisher's early garbage bout Linehan pulling a power play this offseason was probably bunk if they were offering the promotion to Marinelli, instead.

Jerry and company are basically incompetent right now. I’d bounce too. Best move was to go with an entire new coaching staff but we stay the same course that has failed. Insanity.

I am so confused/lost on these coaching changes. Has Jerry actually held one of them accountable and "fired" him or they just leaving for various reasons with nothing to do with actual coaching?

I don't see any rhyme or reason in this "process".........

If you wanted Efer to be DC, then do it and fire Marinelli. There is no reason to move Rod around to make room where he would essentially still be the DC. This isn't the good ole boys club where you can have a job for however long you wish.

Great.

Lose Eberflus this year and then Marinelli retires, this year or next.

Even if they happen to find a good one, they're never smart enough to keep them.

But the ones you don't want around? The guys who can't win after 7 years? Yeah, they'll never leave.

Oh man your avatar is bad haha.

Jerry: We’d like you to be DC and move Rod to Asst Head Coach?

Eberflus: Sorry, I have too much respect for Rod to force him out like that.

Jerry: How bout if we fire him instead?

Eberflus: ...

Sounds like it would go well.

I think the only guy that was actually fired was Dooley, because every one of our WRs regressed this year. The proof of that was leaks to the media about Dooley being "unhappy he didn't have more responsibility". Its like someone in politics saying they are leaving to "spend more time with their family". Both of them mean you weren't coming back no matter what.

Broaddus and the Draft show guys always said that Dooley was not quiet leading up to and during the drafts that he was always lobbying for WRs and making it clear he was upset when they would not take one and so on.

Of course, it's a negative on the Cowboys if they offer him the job and a negative if they don't. Some posters are here to create a complaint no matter what the Cowboys do.

It's like with O-Line coach ... fans trashed the Cowboys for going with an inexperienced Marc Colombo as O-Line coach (even though they actually didn't - they just decided to get a head start on the complaining), and then when they actually hired a very experienced head coach the fans trash the Cowboys for that.

This doesn't make sense. If Eberflus didn't want to step on Marinelli's toes even though Marinelli still would have had a job, why would you think he would have been okay with the team firing Marinelli so he could have the job?
Because that's what happens in rhis game. Coordinators get fired and assistants get hired to take over....he put his time in but old man rod won't go away

I hope when they fired him Jerry said "Derek, its time for you to take one".

I think all these moves are normal turnover, but Dooley is the only guy that clearly should have been canned. I've read Wade Wilson had health issues and that was a big part of him leaving, but it could also be an issue with Dak's development.
