FOX gets Thursday Night Football

Either that or Fox thinks that they will get a return on their investment and your assumptions are flawed. It's not like they don't have a ton of experience broadcasting NFL games over recent history to draw from. But of course you a random fan would know more than Fox's legion of analysts.

This is an incredibly conservative network who cuts shows at the first sign of danger routinely. They don't throw money away.

Well, yeah, its all just opinions. Even those legion of analysts are ultimately just projecting the future based on the past & what they think they know. Or it could be one guy high enough up the food chain that says we are doing it no matter what the analysts say. Absolutely, they could know something that isn't public knowledge that makes it more reasonable. But its also possible they are making a miscalculation. Big companies aren't immune to mistakes. Guess we will have better info in 6 years.

This a 5 year deal for FOX so increases are built in for the longer contract

Ad revenue declined for the NFL by 1.2% .....that is not a good sign

The annual price increased. There's nothing "built in." It was $450M last year, and it's $600M this year.

1.2%, lol? That is well within normal fluctuation range since nothing goes straight up forever. Talk about hoping against hope, lol.

You understand that there is a difference between an opinion, an informed opinion, and an expert opinion right? Fox has informed, expert opinions and we do not.

Every prediction the "NFL IS DOOMED" crowd has been wrong so far. TV contracts are up, the NFL is monetizing new markets, and the NFL's revenue increased yet again. That is not opinion. But of course the crowd's narrative remains the same.

TNF games should only be scheduled during the bye week period and only played by teams coming off a bye. Give the coaches and players extra time and they might just give the audience a better game.

Living on the West Coast and watching TNF, SNF and MNF can be awesome when there a great game. Leave work a little early to catch the game at home while eating dinner or head to a sports bar with a group of friends.

That is not normal

“For the first time since we have been tracking the market, we saw a slight drop of in-game dollars,” said Standard Media Index CEO James Fennessy.

Even though prices for spots rose the revenue still declined

But the networks aired more make-good spots during games this year to cover ratings shortfalls. Makegoods accounted for 23% of the spots in games, up from 21% last year.

This a 5 year deal for FOX so increases are built in for the longer contract..... FOX just got billions from Disney and they want to promote FoxSports1 and FoxSports2 ...... they are willing to take big losses.

This is completely unfounded. You like saying this but you have zero proof that this is actually the case.

Youve been saying the old deal was already a loss so basically you are now claiming that Fox is willing to eat more than $150m a year to advertise their new networks.

An ad spot costs about $500k for an NFL game. They could buy advertising for said networks on many many more spots for a miniscule fraction of that cost. Nevermind their current NFL deal.

Your assertion doesn't even make sense.

would be nice if they assigned Aikman and Buck to Thursday night games only.

Fox’ deal will pay the NFL more than the combined $450M per year CBS and NBC paid over the last two years. Sources peg Fox’ payout at an average of around $550M per year through the '22 season,

https://sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Morning-Buzz/2018/01/31/tnf.aspx

The league and the network announced Wednesdaythat they have agreed to a five-year deal that will keep the NFL's Thursday night games on Fox through 2022. Fox will pay more than $3 billion over the length of the deal (in excess of $600 million per year), a person with knowledge of the details told USA TODAY Sports. The person was granted anonymity because financial terms were not made public.

It's $3.3b over 5 years.

I thought the NFL was dead though? I read it here.
Long time bro. We’ll get 5 pages of *****ing about it. Sorry, but I’ll take my football on Monday, Thursday, Sat, and twice on Sunday! I’m a die-hard Cowboys’ fan, but a fan of all that’s football. I’ll even give that abomination XFL a shot when it comes around in 2020.

Suck it up butter cups!

Only thing I would get rid of is the ridiculous, millineal, color rush bull****!

Go back to the regular uni’s and I could almost guarantee the NFL ratings would begin to trend upwards on Thursday nights.

This past Sunday night, the pro bowl had the highest ratings on television scoring better
That is misleading......... last year the game was only on ESPN and got a 4.2 rating
This year it was broadcast on ABC and ESPN and got a 3.6 on ABC and a 1.6 on ESPN

The NFL is still enjoying record advertising revenue despite the ratings dip
Ad revenue fell for the first time ever this year...it wasn't much at -1.2% but it has never gone down before

The NFL doubling down on Thursday night football is such a NFL move. Dumbest league management in all of sports.

They need to go to an 18 Week schedule with 2 Byes per team

If they are going to stick with International and ThursNF then they should schedule them around the Bye Weeks to limit short weeks

Agree 100%. Goodell is such a fraud. Implement strict rules on tackling and remove the kickoff to "protect" the players. Thursday night games and turning extra points into FGs counters that. The league is run by morons. The players universally hate the Thursday games. If it was all about the players health they should have those 2 bye weeks and expand the rosters. That will actually protect them. It is a sinking ship.
