I would trade Zack Martin for a 1st and 2nd

Maybe he picked up another Martin and Sean Lee? Both significantly cheaper.

Maybe, but it's a pretty good roll of the dice instead of sticking with the sure thing.

You must have loved the 8-8 years under Garrett. Teams win with playmakers.
It's simple math. You set a budget for each position and\or position group that is a % of the overall cap $'s. If a position group gets out of whack or you can see that is going to, you have to look at options. Not being able to do that is part of what led to those 8-8 teams.

Let's assume it's a mid 1st and mid 2nd rounder. Sp the 17th pick.

History of 17th and 49th picks
2017: Jon Allen & Ryan Anderson
2016: Keanu Neal & Jarran Reed
2015: Arik Armstead & Mitch Morse
2014: CJ Mosley & Jace Amaro
2013: Jarvis Jones & Johnathan Hankins
2012: Dre Kirkpatrick & Kendall Reyes
2011: Nate Solder & Ben Ijalana

Hear me out....

Zack is one of my fave Cowboys but....he's playing hardball and will want a ridiculous contract.

We cant have all our cap dollars tied up in linemen, I wouldn' sign him anyway for the contract he wants so why not throw some trade bait out there

1st and 2nd or two 1sts...whatever
JUST STOP. .....BUT ok..I will play your little hypothetical game. If I were inclined to trade Martin, I want two 1st round picks, PERIOD END OF STORY. Secondly, The picks would have to be extremely high. Lastly, I think I would trade with Cleveland or Denver. That would almost guarantee Dallas we can draft Derwin James OR Nelsen. ...or what about a shocker? ...just to be different, Dallas drafts a QB IN THE TOP 5? So ok, I played along.

What if we traded Martin plus our 1st pick to Cleveland for their #4 overall, Then traded back to #8 or 9 for their 2nd rd pick and a 4th? In the process picking up Roquan Smith and we would get 2 2nd rd picks and 2 4th rd picks?
I wouldn't give them Martin & our first but otherwise I have thought along the same lines. Let's say you worked a trade & got #4, do you sit tight & pick Chubb or do you trade back and still get a stud plus additional premium picks?

It would be so hard to pass on Chubb given our history of looking for a war daddy .... but I think trade back and get either VV, Edmonds, Fitzpatrick, or James plus the additional picks is too good to pass up. In my scenario we would still have 19 so we could conceivably kill it with our first 5 picks or so.

Real world problem is Cleveland is pretty set at Guard. Heck maybe we get 4 plus one of their guards & we give Martin plus combination of picks. If Tyron wasn't on such a team friendly deal he would be more attractive option to them.

If Tyron wasn't hurting I would do this deal but something tells me he's going to retire early due to his back.

DUH. so would every other GM in history.

he's a guard with 1 year left on his deal. you aren't getting more than a mid-low 2nd round pick for him.

I wouldn't trade a young, proven NFL All Pro for 2 unknowns.
That's my things as well. Do fans understand how freaking long teams go trying to find a player like Zach Martin? He is a player that comes along once every 5 or 6 years. They make it sound as if we can find his replacement just like that and suffer little drop off. Its just nuts. Zeke would suffer,Dak would get more of a beating...the receivers would suffer...ITS JUST A BAD IDEA. He deserves to be paid like the best olineman in the league because HE IS...period. PAY THE MAN.

Hypothetical question for you guys that have concerns over the line taking up too much cap room (which I disagree with based on how the offense is run). What is an acceptable percentage of the cap that should be allocated to the line and ultimately to Martin? Also, keep in mind that the bottom half of the roster only accounts for about 7-10% of the cap any given year.
It depends on the philosophy of the team, and how the team is generally constructed.

But 18% is a pretty good number that I would roll with. You have NE who is sitting at about 9%.

And the percentage also has to account for a distributed allocation, to some degree. Meaning your top 5 can't account for 85% of all the money paid there.

With Martin and his 5th year option, we have 4 players getting paid in the top 5 of their respective position. So not only are we paying far too much for oline, but we are paying that to 4 guys. That means we have no credible backups. We now have Fleming, who is getting paid borderline starter money. But we also don't have a starting guard either.

Can we trade you to another message board?

Do fans not understand the salary cap? Everyone is tradeable other than the star QB (if you have one). See the Patriots trading Richard Seymour, Chandler Jones, and Jamie Collins.

wrong. He is the best OLINEMAN IN THE LEAGUE...be it guard or not. We could get 2 first round picks for him...I PROMISE YOU THAT. AND if we couldn't,I would simply tag him next year hoping we can work out a long term deal. At some point we got to pay the man...he's earned it.

ok if you say so

show me the last time someone traded a 1st round pick for a Guard, let alone 2

no dice...and yes...I understand the cap. I understand winning and being able to run the ball too. I understand I want to protect my Franchise QB.

You said to another poster that even the pats let good players walk, like Solder.

I statef that Solder cant hold Martins jock strap. The pats wouldnt have allowed Martin to leave if they were in our position.

You have no way of knowing this. And Id bet there is no way they wouldn't let him walk. And they also wouldn't be paying Fred or Smith what they are getting either.

Just look at how much they spend on oline. It's peanuts compared to us.

Show me the last guard like Zach Martin within the last 10 years. Many good ones to be sure, but nobody like him.

You wouldn't sign the guy who solidified our line and is arguably the best at his position in football? LOL. Glad you aren't the GM sir. Like I get it obviously. But losing Martin would destroy this line.

RG is ranked as the 15th most important position on the field , according to NFL.com http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...tions-importance-from-quarterback-to-returner

The question is how much money can we afford to pay a G, and still be able to pay more important positions? Having the highest paid G in NFL history may not be the path to a super bowl. You can't play RG any better than Zach has played it the past 4 years. Team still hasn't won anything. How does tripling his pay help the team? If someone offers us a decent 1st round pick, you either have to sign him long term or do the trade. Making him play out his 5th option is just short sighted team management.
