Rumor: Mortensen: Witten to retire **merged**

How could he keep playing is the question some should have asked themselves a few weeks/months ago.

Please post something which states emphatically Witten is retiring. I have looked and seen a great deal of speculation, but nothing quoting the team or Witten.

I find this odd that so many people on this site lambaste Mortensen at every turn, yet he states this and it is burning bush fact.

Zeke didn't have the same burst last year and didn't break tackles like he did his rookie year. Was more to it than just the LT.
I agree with that. Needs to put the beer down. Metabolism is slowing.

It was probably difficult knowing the great Geoff Swaim was breathing down his neck for playing time.

Probably a combination of all those things, but I have to think that it's mostly that he doesn't think he can perform at the right level anymore.

The NFC is still garbage, the Cowboys have as good a shot as most everyone.
No they don't, that's what homers say when they want ignore reality.

He got a take it or leave it lucrative offer that’s the pinnacle of what he wanted to do in the next stage of his life.

I don’t think there’s much more to read into it. Yeah if he was still playing at a pro bowl level or if the Cowboys were Super Bowl favorites like the Eagles/Rams, he might’ve kept playing. I think it’s a stretch to turn that into “he didn’t think he could do it anymore” or that “he doesn’t believe in Dak.”

He realized that a cushioned chair is more appealing than the hard ground is after getting the dust knocked off of him by 20 something year old players.

He and Jerry have a meeting today. Stephen also said it on the radio.

Didn't Stephen say just last week, why even look at TD in the draft? Because Witten wouldn't let them win, or something to that effect?

I think what Stephen was saying was that in times past when they have drafted a TE Witten indicated that he wasn't going to be leaving anytime soon, so the pick was unnecessary, and that's what Stephen was expecting this year too.

Zeke was nothing running the ball last year.

Without him we were nothing. We were rolling at the time he was suspended and the season went into the toilet the next 3 games without him. Our entire offense revolves around him and the running game. With our average receiving corp we’ll be even more dependent on him in 2018.
