1. Again poor goal line play calling. Just run the ball.
2. Playing zone with the corners when their obvious strength is man, especially on that last Detroit TD.
3. Sitting on the ball at the end for a 40 yarder FG that was not a gimme especially for a rookie.
4. Could've ran the ball all day. Zeke should've went for 200+.

They did have an easy td on first and goal with a pass.

Was it really a 40 yard field goal? I’d like them to have run Zeke to get some more yards, but that would’ve given the refs a great opportunity for a bs hold call.

We had a few lucky breaks in this game also that we normally never get. Very few (if any) holding penalties, getting that roughing call when the Detroit lineman hit Dak after he went down, and then Dak recovering his own fumble on the final drive. Incredible poise from #4 on Sunday to hang in there the way he did.

To be fair on point 3... Bret Maher is only a rookie (which he really isn't anyway because he was in training camps before now) because this is his first actual year making an NFL roster. He's been a "pro" in the CFL for a few years now, sure the CFL isn't the same as the NFL... but just saying. You gotta put your kicker out there to make those at some point, you can't worry yourself on them being "rookies" or not.

This thread topic could have been used as far back as 2011. I guess Jerry believes that in Garrett’s 8th full season as a HC, he’s finally going to figure it out.

Other than Cincy’s Mike Brown, the NFL’s other “joke GM”, there’s not another GM that would give the HC 8 years to take their team beyond two playoff appearances and one wild card win.

I agree that players here in Big D win “despite the coaching”. But the much bigger problem is the team occasionally winning in spite of the worst GM in the NFL.

I understand the thinking on #4.
But it was 38 yards, not 40, and it is 5 yards longer than an extra point.
Have to have faith in your K, and JG did. I give him credit. Though I am sure every Cowboys fans was thinking at the time...please show us you can be a Dan Bailey here. LOL.

But if you try to run, which they did a few times, you risk the ball being fumbled trying to get those extra yards. The last play of Dak keeping it to set up the side which to kick it from was a good call.

Of course all hindsight when it works. As well, if it didn't people would be in hind sight mode on why did they do that as well.

1. Again poor goal line play calling. Just run the ball. OK I will give you that one
2. Playing zone with the corners when their obvious strength is man, especially on that last Detroit TD. The corners were not that bad, minus a few plays only issue I have is having woods covering tate on their final drive.
3. Sitting on the ball at the end for a 40 yarder FG that was not a gimme especially for a rookie. Eh 90% of the NFL coaches would have done it the same way. A kick needs pressure kicks otherwise they will never have the experience.

They did they got solid numbers from Rod Smith, also.

so a win it is all the players, lose it is all the coaches and GM...

I am not a JG fan, and get my jabs in, and get them in on the FO as well.
But I try to keep them to when it is true, other than the times done in jest.

But too many fans, blame the coaches on losses, and sometimes deserved but never give credit to the coaches.
This seems hypocritical. This was a good coached game, and the players executed well for the most part. The D almost cost us the game, so was it the players or the coaches?

That’s a fair point Jazz. I do think Garrett and staff deserve some credit for Sunday’s win, and in fact for all wins this team gets. What I’m talking about is I haven’t yet seen a lot of growth in Garrett to stop making the same mistakes over and over that lead to the same kind of losses.

This was actually the first game the coaches actually put our players in positions to suceed in a very long time

Were some calls questionable? Of course but lets not act like the playcalling was bad.

The lions always give us a run for our money

Not knowing the logic, I will lean coaches until I hear otherwise. Golden Tate is no slouch as a WR and putting someone like woods on him who is not by any means a coverage guru seemed dumb.

Just because the coaching wasn’t perfect doesn’t mean the players won despite the coaching.

It’s not that black and white, and football doesn’t exist exclusively in absolutes.

There was some good game planning and play calling during Sunday’s game, along with some good execution, which led to a much needed win. Doesn’t mean it was perfect, and there’s obviously plenty of room for improvement.

Exactly, risk a penalty or fumble. That's the right call run the clock and make sure you get the ball where the kicker wants it.

I agree there was some bad stuff.

The Geoff Swaim TD was stupid even though it worked.

I thought Linehan was really good the first half and the screen pass to Zeke for 7 was money.

Tavon should've scored as well.

But he had his head scratching moments as well.

Another thing.. We didn't take the ball first. Maybe they've finally figured that part of football out.

No running near the goal line has to stop, we have done that too many times

It was a good win, but anyone that criticizes our coaches deserves a like!

I'm as harsh if a critic of these coaches and their playcalling as you will find. And yes, I agree that some of the redzone playcalling was again questionable. Having said that, I will also give Linehan credit for sticking with the running game. That very first drive, I was impressed that he stuck with the run, even if it didn't work. Even moreso, I saw several times on second and third down where he used the running game, where previously he would never consider it.

It's still to be decided whether he's actually learned something or whether that was a one week blip on the radar and something done to appease somebody. But as for this week? I'll give credit for an improved game plan and playcalling and hope that it's the start of a long overdue trend.
