Shultz and Jarwin both have really turned into a lot better pair of TEs than what they looked like earlier. That’s a nice bonus,as what was a weak link is now a strong one. Swaim,Jarwin, and Shultz while not all-pro TEs,are a solid trio and enough to get the job done.

This is some very good news, and very true. Schultz has quickly gone from a non-factor and what sounded like a wasted pick to a guy who's really contributing and looks like he knows what he's doing out there. It's obvious that both Jarwin and Schultz have passed by Gathers, who still can't manage to carve out a role for himself.

I'm hopeful that these two young TE's might be able to help alleviate our red zone woes to some degree. Production from the TE position is a much needed component and the young guys have stepped up recently.

I have felt all along that the TE's could do a solid job if given the chance, and it seems now they are finally being incorporated into the game plan. I don't think any will be standout players, but I think individually and collectively they can make TE at least a solid, contributing position.

I have no idea how anyone would know if Gathers is any good. I think they went to him 3 or 4 times all year and once I recall him being wide open in the end zone only to have Dak overthrow him by 10 yards. The man is huge, even for a TE. If he could learn to use that size to bowl people over they could make good use of him on TE screens inside the 10 yards line. What DB would want to get in front of him going at full speed, even if that speed is slow?

How would we know about Chris Covington or Darian Thompson or with any backup player? That's just how things are as a lower level backup. No player has the right to get opportunities, and size alone isn't enough.

TE is a hard position in the NFL, a well-rounded Y-TE anyway.

No idea if Schultz is going to be any good, but I like that he's caught 8 of his last 10 targets, and his blocking has improved. He's also 22.

Optimistically, he can provide competition to some new TE talent we bring in this offseason.

I actually think that good TE's are available most years.

Baby sholder pads Schultz, Jarwinski, and Hank Gathers nephew are all non factors.

We dont have a TE capable of starting on 95% of the teams in the NFL.

My opinion. Deal with it.
but is that because our QB wont throw it 15plus between the hash marks
Limts their effective routes dramitcally

What a lame post is that.. The kid is a 4th round rookie who has just started to get some burn. What do you expect?

Schultz of course doesn't look as complete a player as Witten or a pass catching threat like many TEs out there. But he sure looked promising last week.

Additionally, if I recall correctly, Witten wasn't exactly a complete player when he started either. He wasn't the Witten we all know immediately. I think Schultz is coming along rather nicely.

Generally agree but I don't know that I'd put the number quite that high. The position was always about development for this season, what we are seeing today from Jarwin and Schultz is where the team expected them to be at the start of this season. Development happens in fits and starts, both guys took some time for the light to go on.

Also Rico is playing without mistakes now, which I'll take at this point. They expected to have one OK starter and two backups at the position out of the four guys we have, what they got was one backup and three practice squad types.

That is changing at this point, Swaim, Jarwin and Schultz all look like OK backups right now. If you add a starting caliber TE next year and let these four guys compete for the two backup spots in 2019 you will be OK. Not great, but OK.
TE generally takes time to develope
Witten was very polished coming out and he had 35 catches his first year

Now you know if they don’t make the pro bowl as a rookie they are busts

Legitimate means able to enhance and elevate the passing game and QB play. The Cowboys got Ditka for Staubach, and then Billy Joe Dupree. They got Cosbie for White. They got Novacek for Aikman. They got Witten for Romo. Cowboys have a history of very good TEs. Jarwin, Schultz, and Swaim are not it. I have no idea about Gathers because they never play him.

So there is no Witten in the making on this roster.
Actually they got Witten for Quincy Carter, lol

What potential?

Schultz is hitting his ceiling, not showing potential. The guy just isn't a good enough athlete to be anything special.

I hated the pick more than most people, but what....?

A 22 year old rookie who has played 223 snaps has hit his ceiling?

And he's actually an above average athlete outside of arm strength https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/dalton-schultz

To me, that's absolute rubbish. Maybe I'm a bit more patient than most fans, but it does take a while for a rookie to get on with his progression. For example, it took England's National squad quite a few friendlies before they became actually quite good in the lead up for the WC. Similarly, it takes a bit for these chaps to learn how to be a pro. A lot of them don't just go flying straight onto the field knowing exactly what to do.

Schultz is going to be a real good player in this league. Smart, tough, and reliable.

We've been spoiled with a Hall of Fame tight end for the past 15 years. It's not fair to compare Schultz to Witten. But if we can get 50 catches a year now on from this kid he will go down as a fourth round steal.

For a pick at the very end of the 4th round, I'd be fine with the pick if he becomes a decent backup like Swaim is right now.

Honestly,
IMO, these new guys are a breath of fresh air. I don't miss those last few years of Witten that much. He started jumping the snap, and lost a step on his routes and as a blocker. Not saying these new guys are as good, but they do seem to get out in space quicker. Witten was awesome in his heyday with #9 at the helm however as of late, those 3 yard sideline patterns on 3rd and 10 were getting old.

It’s huge step from college to pros
Some fans just don’t get that some players have to develope
