Sounds like the frame will completely gone...just a devasting fire and a lot of history is going up in flames...

CBS News has reported that firefighters have turned their attention to saving as much artwork as possible. A spokesperson for the Cathedral says the whole building is on fire. 800 years of French history gone just like that, very sad...

so much flying about right now i have no idea what to believe.

i "heard" that they didnt start fighting the fire for (2) hours, or get there til 2 hours after it started. in any event, it had to be a difficult decision to make to go from saving the building to saving anything you can inside.

I would not want to have made that call. My guess, they consulted the church before they made that call. I have never been to Paris, they say the streets by the church are very narrow...would that have caused a delay in getting to the fire?

The wood in the frame is 300 years old...

Rush hour in Paris, it’s tough to get to Notre Dane anyway, it’s actually located on an island in the Seine.

CBS news just had an expert on who brought up the challenges of where the Cathedral is located. He also said that church fires are very challenging, and the age of the frame and trusses in this church meant it was fully engulfed when the fire department got there.

Yep.

The openness of these large, old cathedrals are basically a breeding ground for fires once they start. So much open space and oxygen to fuel the fires.

Saving the building, it even possible, would mean destroying everything inside.

The landmark has survived wars, including WORLD wars, and revolutions but it will not survive this. Just waiting to hear if the cause of the fire was natural or manmade. It will be disgracefully sad if Notre Dame survived for over 800 years before some idiot destroyed it.

I wouldn't doubt for a second if someone said arson.

Who was lucky enough to visit before this? I've also been to the one in Montreal.

There's been an epidemic of recent church burnings in Europe
This is most likely arson
It's currently undergoing restoration, Police have stated it may be the cause, but obviously it's too early to say.
It's also one of the most protected buildings in France, it's not some local church You could just walk in and start a fire.
