Offensive Line
Tackles - Smith, Collins, Fleming and potentially Williams or McGovern
Guards - Martin, Su'a Filo, Williams, Looney and McGovern
Centers - Frederick, Looney and McGovern

The contracts for Su'a Filo, Looney, and Collins all expire next season. If Collins plays really well this year, the Cowboys are going to get a Compensatory pick for him in 2021, because they won't be able to afford to keep him. Similarly, Looney played well enough last year to garner a lot of free agent interest as a center when his contract expires. Su'a Filo is a former 33rd overall pick who might revitalize his career in Dallas, and like Jonathan Cooper two years ago, land a decent contract with another team.

McGovern can play all 5 positions, and has better arm length (34-1/4") for the tackle position than either Williams (33") or La'el Collins (33-1/4"). The Cowboys signed Fleming to a 2 year free agent contract, which pays him like a backup in 2019, but like a starter in 2020. Even if all three of them leave, and Fleming becomes the starter at Right Tackle, McGovern could develop into a "super-sub" who can back up all 5 spots. Then, when Fleming's contract expires in 2020, McGovern could slide into one of the starting positions in his 3rd season. Or, he could potentially win a starting job sooner. The pick of McGovern.

Bottom line: The Cowboys are now 9-deep at Oline, and are set up to withstand the departures of Free agents a year from now. And they still have developmental prospects in Jake Campos and Adam Redmond.

Defensive Line
Defensive End - DeMarcus Lawrence, Robert Quinn, Randy Gregory, Kerry Hyder, Dorance Armstrong, Taco Charlton
Defensive Tackle - Tyrone Crawford, Maliek Collins, Christian Covington, Trysten Hill, Antwaun Woods, Daniel Ross

With Randy Gregory suspended, the Cowboys have a legitimate 5-man rotation at DE, with Crawford and Covington as the 6th and 7th guys who can play DE. Quinn will be backup by by Hyder and Armstrong, while Lawrence will be backed up by Charlton. If Gregory gets reinstated this year, the Cowboys will have to make some decisions on who to keep at DE, but that is a good problem to have. Gregory had 7 sacks in his last 9 games, and could push Quinn for the starting job at RDE, because he's better against the run than Quinn.

At Tackle, there will be a competition between Crawford, Hill and Collins for the starting 3T position. Covington and Woods will vie for the starting 1T position, with Daniel Ross pushing them both.

Really only confident in Lawrence, Quinn, and somewhat Crawford. Most of these players were part of the problem on the defensive side of the ball against the Rams.

I need to see this rotation in action before I'm excited.

Inside tackles need to be stronger and faster than the inside OL.
1T needs to be able to anchor against double of C and G as well as be able to bull rush either singly, and be quick enough to get to the QB on pass plays.
3T needs to be quicker and still be able to handle singled up on the G.

The ones we currently have are average at best. Maybe Hill helps the 3T position. 1T still might be able to penetrate, but can't anchor, nor can they stay healthy because they keep giving up too much weight to the OL.

I’m not making any excuses the Rams kicked our *** and were the better team. But to me Ross , Reid have been upgraded by Covington and Hill. And it might be a big upgrade. Also in that game Crawford and Collins were coming off injuries and looked about 50% woods played with a torn ligament. We needed better DT’s, and got some.

I can never argue with picks that beef up our interiors. The Hill pick gives us a solid 5 man rotation at DT and also allows Crawford to move outside if needed. Maliek has also been chronically injured lately, so it’s good cover for him.

McGovern is more of a pick for the future but it’s wise to get prepared for Lael’s imminent departure. A lot of people are speculating that Williams will be moved to RT next year but I’m thinking Martin is the more likely guy to be moved.

If they intend on extending Dak

And Dak performance is tied to a clean interior pocket

That 3rd pick makes a lot of sense

Oh is that all the 1T needs to do? Stronger bigger faster and can get constant double teams?

I think you nailed it. Dallas has ton of flexibility on OL. Three players can start RT (Collins, Fleming & maybe Connor Williams). Three players can start at C (Frederick, Looney & maybe McGovern). Five can start at either guard spot (Martin, Looney, McGovern, Filo and maybe Connor Williams). The only spot that is little light at depth is LT with Fleming likely only player to back up Smith.

McGovern is about power. Williams is about feet. Power inside, feet on the outside.

Everybody happy now?

The Hill pick looks a little iffy to me, but I'll live. He's actually the kind of pick I expected. Raw, but a little freaky with extra upside. We've got decent depth this year at 3T, so the 3T pick was likely to be a little more developmental for the future.

Taking McGovern shows a commitment to taking BPA and oline. Two years in a row we've taken oline early who seemed to drop. Both are starters by 2020, at least one this year.

I know competition is good bud we have so many DE's and DT's now that we will be cutting good players or trying to stash guys on the practice squad. This is o.k. if you don't have severe weakness at other positions. We do not have adequate safety's and we still don't.

Lawrence
Quinn
Gregory
Armstrong
Taco
Heyder
Jackson
Jelks

AT DE. How many can they carry? Who are the odd men out?

Crawford
Collins
HIll
Covington
Woods
Ross
Wise

at DT. You can get some cap savings by cutting Crawford but he is one of the more dependable players on the team.

I feel like they will try to stash the guys they just drafted on the practice squad and they are good enough to get poached so we will get nothing in return.

As it stands today: this is is a top 5 Defense no doubt.

We were banged up going into both the Colts and Rams contests- the two worst performances of the year.

Today- our DL depth is magnificent. We will rock and roll this season. Quinn and Hyder are excellent signings. We added 2 players today that may push Charlton, Armstrong, or Crawford, maybe even Hyder- off the roster entirely.

If Gregory returns this is without question the most savage DL in the entire NFL.

Really nice post bro. I love the overall depth on both lines. Both lines interiors offer better peace of mind for me overall. There would be a drop off of sizable proportions if an extended Smith loss at LT or Lawrence at DE.

Quinn could surprise me and be that Gregory type bookend compliment to Lawrence. But "IF" Gregory were to mysteriously be granted re-instatement, we truly would be formidable.

Smittys loss at LT, even with all the names you mentioned and their abundance of talent would be the only glaring weakness if it were a prolonged loss. He's just that good.

I am a "show me" type of guy but I will admit to having some confidence in both of these lines myself. And thats a good thing.
Again, good post man.

All depends on Hill.

If we whiffed there, we need a 3-T again next year.

The McGovern pick might end up to be very beneficial.
