Half Season Rental?

Lets day the team looks to be a sure fire SB contender and we get two weeks out from the trade deadline. Let’s also assume our defensive tackles continue to look like they did during the Giants game. Would you trade a pick for a half season rental for a stout DT (maybe a 4th) that you probably wouldn’t resign?

Why would a 4th get a stout DT?

We’re one game in.

Other than that first-of-the-season rushing attempt by Barkley (47yds by debatably the best RB in the league), the Giants didn’t exactly run all over us.

Need to see more games before even considering a rental DT.

Take that run out and he still averaged about 6 ypc.

Were the DTs a problem in the Giants game?

Barkley had 1 run for 59 yards and all of his other runs totaled 61 yards.

The 59 yard run was outside of the DE. Nothing the DTs could do about that one.

If the team looks like a sure fire SB contender, then the DT's aren't playing that bad, so why make any changes?
Because "not playing that bad" is mostly not good enough once you get into the playoffs. Interior disruption is often the difference maker at that level.

DIdn't you notice that last year our DT's "weren't playing that bad" going into the Rams game?

If there was a problem with the Cowboys DTs, are the Jaguars rebuilding this year?

Marcell Dareus, age 29, 2.5M for 2019, 9.5M for 2020.

Others:
  • Bills: Star Lotulelei 7.1M for 2019, age 30.
  • Bengals: Geno Atkins 8M for 2019, age 30.
  • Broncos: Derek Wolf, 4.5M for 2019, age 26, free agent in 2020.

No. It's short sighted.

Because we still have Garrett and we need more talent than the other team has in order to win. We aren't going to out coach anyone.
Since Moore seems to have been turned loose, it's highly likely that this is no longer true.

Look again. Yes they did. Our defensive line got pushed around and did nothing. They picked up right where they left off last year, getting us bounced out of the playoffs.
How’d they do in the red-zone?

If you want to rely on bad playcalling and turnovers to bail you out all year?

First of all, the Cowboys are already a Super Bowl contender. Period. They're one of the top 3 teams in the NFC, if not the best team in the NFC. No need to wait.

And as @CATCH17 mentioned, when Quinn comes back it's going to make a huge difference. He's a monster who just got caught in a few bad situations. He might end the season with more sacks than Tank. Remember this stat, it's my favorite of the off-season: Quinn led the league in 2018 in beating his man when blocked one on one. And you know he's going to get blocked one on one a lot this season with Tank on the other side.

Bottom line - yes, if there is a stud DT available, I think Jerry will make a play for him. Who?

McCaffrey? We don't play the Panthers this season and they aren't making the playoffs.

I wouldn't count them out...They just barely lost to the Rams and I watched McCafrey hang almost 200 all purpose yards on that Rams defense. However, I used McCafrey because other than him being in the NFC his skill set is tailor made to hack us up....but my apologies

So, great play-calling within the first 80yds, but they suddenly can’t couldn’t function in the last 20yds, lol?

Or maybe this is what a proper BDB defense is about; lotsa yards, few points.

Btw...how many of NYG’s yards were listed in the final score?

If you want to tell me the handoff to the fullback rather than Barkley is 'good playcalling'? The floor is yours, have at it!

Is that what it was vs the Rams too? Or was that just "break"? This idea of this being 'by design' is absurd.

Well, then I'd guess you'd better hope to score 35 points by the 3rd quarter every week to take every opponent out of their gameplan. Some great 'strategy' there.

Yeah, letting a team run up and down the field is not a good design. And that might work against weaker teams, but those teams will score when you start playing playoff teams.

If we determine that DTs are going to be an achilles heel and we're going the trade route, I'd rather make a trade for a more permanent solution.
That would cost 1st/2nd round picks. Sure that's what you want to do?

Seriously, we just beat a weak team. They piled up yards but only scored more than 10pts due to a garbage-time gimme TD.

How about we play a few more games before we go all sky-is-falling on the defense?

As I said in my original comment: it’s too soon to be considering a rental DT.

They got lucky with bad playcalling and execution from the Giants more than any great plays that they were making, specifically the defensive line. The got run over and were fortunate that Barkley was taken out of the game - not by them clearly - but by the poor playcalling of his own coach. And then they did nothing in terms of generating pass rush either.

Anyone who wants to step up and tell me that poor run defense + no pass rush = 'a good day', have at it!
