to win in today’s league the goal is to have a top flight offense and at least an average to above average defense.

the defense is only going to get stronger the rest of the year as guys get fully healthy and in football shape.

Offensively, I don’t think we’ll blow teams out this bad every week but even coming down a little still puts the team at the top of the league.

For as to why the defense seems a lot softer this year I have 2 thoughts.

1) they’re not afraid of big plays by the opponents the first 2 games so why leave base 4-3 or base nickel. Just let teams go down the field and eventually they’ll self destruct.

2) along with the first thought, they’re saving any big wrinkles defensively for the Saints. The defense has guys like Crawford, Quinn, DLaw, Lee, Byron and others who are using the first few weeks like preseason. We already know what they are at full speed so unlike the offense we don’t need to test anything out.

Also, seeing how this offense is dominant, just keep things in front of you and try to hold the opposition to field goals. The math will outdo them in the long run trading FGs for TDs. We saw that a ton today.

Run defense was much better and they pretty much just guarded against the home run ball. Give up underneath stuff and trust offenses won’t be patient for 80 yards.

Why does everyone say the defense is going to be better when they have been responsible for our last 3 playoff exits.
Well if the offense can score 28 in playoffs the game won’t be over as soon as the other team scores 17.

And the coverage on the back end has been very tight which will limit Rodgers type hero ball plays to some extent.

Bigger ? is how long is Woods out and how does that impact run D

Our pass defense was not good last year and hasnt been good this year. Our offense scored 31 and lost in the playoffs.

This defense needs to wake up, they appear to be sleepwalking. Now it would it be great to have eight sacks and four interceptions on the season but that's not exactly my focus. I watched the Falcons/eagles game and there was an energy that both defenses played with.

In that game the defenses arrived with bad intentions, you could hear the collisions on just about every snap. Energy! We need to up our energy level, we need to arrive with bad intentions. Once we do that we will become a better defense and the stats will take care of themselves.

League rules are making that difficult. Yes, I'd like more punishing hits if we are playing the game in a petri dish...or in yesterday's NFL framework. But we've avoided defensive penalties and glaring assignment mistakes.

Play solid and smart on D...score 30+ on offense. I like our chances.

The take-away from tonight? I don't want my team playing games like that, self-destructing and walking away with 4 or 5 key players hurt.

So are you saying the defense is holding back. Saving the good stuff for the better offenses? :muttley:

Run defense was better, plus it got better when Covington took over for Woods, or so it seemed.
But for now we have have offense that can outscore the opponents until the D gets its kinks worked out.

Good way to put it, our D has seemed to play without that energy in these 2 games.

I’m more concerned about TO’s myself. This team just can’t get the ball on a short field.

Because there is a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball for 1.

We don't have the same defense we had when we faced the Packers.

They were a really good unit almost the entire season last year until the Rams game.

We watched them completely shut down the New Orleans Saints offense last year who no other team had an answer for.

The defense is not hitting on all cylinders yet and they're getting decent results. They have answers to all of the questions.

Outside of the garbage time TD the Commanders only drove the field and scored on us once. The other was from the turnover and great field position.

I do worry about Rod / Richard getting outcoached in a playoff setting. The Rams game last year was so bad from the coaches.

I noticed the energy with the Falcons/Eagles as well. That seems to be missing for the Boys this season. The D-line for the boys seem anemic thus far and J-smith and LVE appear to be a step slower.

.

This team is not reading and reacting like they did last season. They seam to have a lackluster approach. The D-Line and LBs are a cause for concern. It is as if they drink BENADRYL instead of Red Bull.

If we're not going to get pressure up the middle I don't see anything improving. If we have to Blitz a good quarterback is going to eat us up
