Because if you trail only 21-16, that means your next touchdown puts you ahead of the Jets, regardless of whether your conversion is successful. You'd lead either 22-21 or 24-21, but one way or another, you'd be leading.

Whereas, if you trail 21-15, then a touchdown only ties you 21-21, and there's the risk of Maher missing the extra point.
