So..

Of much of the info coming out about this McCarthy hire..

The fact he added to his base knowledge while off last year with adding analytics to his game planning is interesting and should help us immediately.

You would think most HCs would not have time to incorporate this directly..

leaving it to an assistant to do it.

Which is not the same as the person calling the plays and monitoring game flow.

And let's be clear..you have to be pretty darn smart to understand the numbers and use them well.

So obviously Mc Carthy is no dummy.

I took several statistical college courses and using numeric output to arrive at predicting outcomes is a little bit errie.

I was a psych major training lab rats in behavior modification.

At times stats implicates results you question but as you study it..are correct more often than not.

Recently it was revealed the Cowboys were not using analytics in playcalling.

It was plainly said they did not recognize it, yet teams all over the NFL were moving in that direction.

McCarthy being proficient in it was something Dallas could immediately now use thru McCarthy.

Interesting.

A quick about face if you ask me.

Be very interested in any of you out there who understand this and can add something about its function and use.

McCarthy seems a different breed of cat.

We shall see.

his analytics dept.
and his idea to have 2 "futures" coaches...1 on offense...1 on defense...to study formations and plays that work....and those that don't.
not only self scouting the team...but what others are doing.
he'll use them similar to Nick Saban's think tank in bama.
very forward thinking.

this all reminds me of Landry studying offensive and defensive tendencies.

Just remember mm has never used analytics in a game when wins and losses are on the line. You just never know how any of this is going to play out.

I also like what he said about making his QB watch a tape he made of Joe Montana's foot-work.
helping Dak to be even better with his footwork and fundamentals is going to be awesome to watch.
he''s gotten better each year...this will take him to that next level.

True.

But I have read small bits of its place in the game.

It is subject to how much and how its info gets used.

Coaches who use it are certainly on a leading edge with the game.

Traditional coaches are not going to employ it, for sure.

I just appreciate the fact we now have it.

Sounds like common sense that should have been going on for 20 years but Garrett was so stubborn that he would never quit using plays in situations where they never worked. He just insisted on not changing. He could still be the coach if he had any self awareness and common sense at all.

Watching the NBC interview with Peter King that was posted, he made a few comments that makes me think he knows what he is talking about regarding analytics. First off he said that he came into the league that way as a quality control coach, and second he said that it is the application of that information that will make a difference or not.

Understanding that analytics is not math, but information in quantitative form, and knowing how to interpret that information properly and apply it correctly is everything.

Had not read that.

I read where there was all this tension with McCarthy and Rodgers.

I definitely see where Rodgers was the instigator of this.

No way do I think Rodgers developed his talent without help and guidance.

McCarthy after 13 years has to get his deserved credit for Rodger's sucess.

It also appears he is the type coach who does not require credit for his success.

That blends well with an owner who is completely the opposite.

Nice.

it was in the interview piece with peter king.
it's a tape of Montana's foot work when they both were with the chiefs.
he said he wants his QB to have sound footwork.
he said he wants his QB to study that tape.
I like the idea of having a young, teachable QB study the greats.
this is gonna be fun to watch.
Dak's hard work...is about to be rewarded.
good for him.
good for us.

This is a great point. I work in research and analytics. I see a lot of people use our data incorrectly and it doesn't do them any good. I see others who use the information, combined with their industry expertise, and dominate. What excites me about this situation is MM should have the experience, background, and football knowledge to use the information to his advantage. He has real life (game) experience - it's the combination of that experience and the insights gained from analytics that will hopefully make a huge difference.
