Kick the tires on backup QBs?

I have my doubts that Cooper Rush is our answer for backup QB. Makes me suspect it might be a good idea to draft or trade for another backup QB, someone whom we can win with if Dak goes down for something like 4 games. I still have nightmares over the 2015 season. I see Paxton Lynch has ended up on the Steelers' roster as a backup. He's who I originally wanted the team to draft in 2016. I had kind hoped the team would have claimed him off waivers when the Broncos released him. I have wondered if he would be a better backup than Rush. Or is he just another Brandon Weeden?

Do you guys think Rush is our guy for backup? Or is there someone you think would be an upgrade who's possible to get?

Bridgewater, Mariotta, Fitzpatrick and Keenum off the top of my head. Plenty of others I'm sure.

Makes it more imperative to have a strong backup this year, since we might be in for a holdout with our starting QB. This year, the holdout would even be more critical, since there is a whole new coaching staff and a new philosophy. Everyone should be invested on day 1 and if you are not part of it, sit the season out.

If DAL is gonna bring in a QB get a who can deal. Problem is they always get QB who don't threaten the QB1, and that's why they get beat up at the negotiating table...and it's not just the QB position.

If you want to bring in a QB, let MM (QB guru) identify a guy and get him because the scouting department is struggling right now.

Bridgewater will get a look as a starter somewhere, for sure, and I think Fitz will too for a team who drafts one.

Mariotta is interesting, because he has a skillset similar enough to Dak's that I don't think you'd have to change the offense too much if Dak's out.

No team with a good QB brings in competition, and it certainly doesn't matter when it comes to contract. This scenario you're talking about has literally never happened.

Us fans have the tendency on looking at the obvious while ignoring what MM is eyeing. I'm sure MM has his own list of backup and developmental QB's from around the league.

What about a guy like Brett Hundley, who is about to become a free agent and was with MM in Green Bay from '16-'17?

That is just one example. Who knows what other players out there might be on MM's radar. Remember, he just spent all of '19 watching the entire NFL and preparing for his return.

Besides injury concerns, and although it would seem a small concern at this stage of the offseason, it is possible that Dak might hold out (at least for a few games, maybe?) if he gets Franchised and is slow to sign the tender.

It certainly wouldn’t hurt to do a bit of window shopping at Backups-R-Us.

Draft better concerning the Cowboys.

Montana n Young, Favre n Rodgers, Bledsoe n Brady, Brady n Jimmy G, Alex Smith n Mahomes...all these scenarios never happened?

This isn't true. The Cowboys had Craig Morton, 5th over all pick and they went ahead and drafted Roger Staubach. Cowboys had Staubach and they still went ahead brought in Danny White. 49ers had Montana and they brought in Steve Young. There are lots of examples of this happening.

Im just curious as to why you have doubts if Cooper could be a decent back up?

Uh yea lots of teams draft a developmental guy when the starter gets old. That's not what you're talking about. If Dak was 34, this comparison would be relevant.

What you're talking about is bringing in a comparable guy to backup a prime-aged starter so you can leverage that guy to pay your starter less. The problem is that the starter knows he's the starter and that he's better than the backup, so it doesn't make a single difference at the negotiating table. If the backup was better, he'd be the starter.

Well, independent of how irrelevant what teams did at quarterback 60 years ago is - both because of how the game is played and the salary cap - this is not what was being described.

Staubach wasn't the starter until 7 years after he was drafted as a 10th-round pick lol. Just not at all the same thing.

No. I'm talking about bringing in a QB that can deal... that's what I said. And DAL should and should've by all means brought in a baller cause Dak ain't nowhere close to the QBs I named.

They are paying Dak one way or another this year, so I expect a cheap contract behind Dak, probably a guy still on his ELC.
