Just for the sake of this thread I am providing a link to a mock draft simulator
https://fanspeak.com/ontheclock-nfl-mock-draft-simulator/
It is not the only one out there, might not even be the best out there. Just one I have used and am familiar with for the sake of doing mock drafts.
With that out of the way...
Although things will start picking up around combine time there are still some of us in here who enjoy reading mock drafts, making mock drafts and/or using the simulated mock draft sites.
Some hate the mock draft simulators as they are not always realistic however I have always maintained that they can be a valuable learning tool.
It forces, or it least it should encourage, users to look at reviews of a number of players and positions they might never think about.
When you start getting into third day picks you might not initially know too many names.
By doing these simulated mock drafts it should encourage you to go to a multitude of sites to look up information on a player that could be taken in the later rounds.
Something else that the simulated drafts can help with is the strength of the positions in the draft.
If you know the team could use DE, DL, S, CB or other positions in a need situation it can help you determine which way you might draft and in turn which way the cowboys might draft.
For example one could make a good argument that unless they decide to move on from A.Cooper or a WR falls to us that they have rated far above any other player available to them...chances are they are not going to take a WR with the first round pick. This however might be a good thing because this years draft seems to be a deep draft for WRs and we can get some good ones later in the draft. Again that is if we decide to move on from Amari.
You will want to look at the tiers of player positions. If this years draft is considered deep in WRs...is it as deep in S, CB, DE and DL?
Start doing multiple drafts in the simulator site With each draft start your first round pick with a different position that has value at that spot.
For instance for one take a DE that might be ranked in that general area, probably one a couple that might be available if that.
The next one take a S
The next one take a CB
The next one a DL or WR
When you do that you will start looking at your next few picks and seeing the quality of players left at various positions.
If you take a WR in the first will a top end DE, DL, S or CB be available with your next few picks or will that position dry up quickly.
If you take a DL in the first and want to get a DB later, are there quality CBs or S at your next few positions.
This might give you some idea of how the draft will go and how the Cowboys might view the draft at least from the first pick.
If they want to come out of this draft with a DE, DL,CB, S or WR ....they might evaluate what the value of the player and position is and if they have a decent shot of getting a player of value later in a position group.
If they feel that the only chance they have of getting a DE they really like is in the first and feel that they can get a quality WR or DB in the later rounds...they might do that.
If they feel that they think they have a better chance at getting a quality DB in the first and DL in the later drafts, that might be the route to go.
This, IMO, is why some of these draft simulators can come in handy. It helps you learn of players you might not normally know and it also helps give you an idea of how the team might view things positional wise.
Like I said just one area I have already seen is that if the Cowboys still with Cooper chances are they will not take a WR in the first. However if they want to get a good WR to help the team or groom for later...this is a decent class of WRs and they have a good chance of getting a good one later.
Just something to consider and it also gives another excuse for doing the mock drafts.
