Chiefs will ask Sammy Watkins to take pay cut or be released?

Because he's honest and realizes he did not play up to his salary?
Please lol. If he feels that way then he should sit back and allow them to cut him lol. Sounds great on the back of a hallmark card but no one is giving millions away.

Crabtree did get overpaid though lol. And that’s a great example.
He did get overpaid initially (back before the rookie wage scale) but when he hit the exact point of Watkins career (1 solid year out of 6) he got a measly 1 year deal for 3 million dollars........

No team is paying Watkins high dollar money, he's basically Crabtree 2.0 that's why Kansas wants a pay reduction (21 million dollar cap hit for someone of Watkins caliber is embarassing).

Yes, they do. Free did. Brady did.

There's more players that do it than you think, you just don't hear about them because they don't make the news.

And when you're already very rich, giving away a few millions is not as important.

I disagree. Never underestimate what teams will do. Did you see what Golden Tate got in his 30s last year?

Will you guys stop with this Brady crap? He was always highly compensated either by his rich wife or the PaTs.

Free did it because he made more money with the Cowboys than he would’ve had he got cut. Chiefs cut Sammy they will take a huge cap hit. It’s stupid to take a pay cut.

I could see him take a "pay cut" in a form of an extension where they drop his cap hit big time but he receives another decent signing bonus.

I don't think the Chiefs owe him any more guaranteed money. He received 30mil guaranteed which was a 21mil SB, base salary for 2019 and ~8mil of his 2020 base salary.
If they cut him, they eat 7mil dead from the prorated SB hit but save 14mil in cap space.

But yea, he'll still have value on the market so it'll be "dumb" $ for him to simply take a cut.

You think a team won’t pay a 26 year old former top pick in the draft? I’ve seen Anthony Hitchens get overpaid. Someone will pay Watkins that has the money to spend.

Absolutely. Do people really think a team won't pay him in the mid teens? He's a 21 Mil cap hit for KC and a 7 Mil dead cap for them. They're probably better off with the dead cap choice. Other teams have better options. But if I was him and liked where I lived, especially after already making close to 40 Mil, I'd take the pay cut to stay on a great team in a nice state over pride. Dude could be sent to Detroit or Minnesota, good God! Missouri is a nice state. I've only been there once but I liked it. And as WR you can't ask to be on a better team right now. But hey, he has his pride.

Yep. He’s just too young to do it. I can see right now the Jets or Bears signing him.

For the right price I’d go to Minnesota and Detroit. If I’m a star I have more choices. Watkins.....I don’t think he does.

A recent example of the cowboys doing the exact oppisite is Crawford last season

We could of literally upgraded both DT positions for the exact price of cutting him........... (doesn't that make our fanbase sick to there stomachs ?).

Cowboys front office isn't bold, isn't realistic, and has too many emotions. The narrative was "we can't cut Crawford because that would make us look bad for giving a bid deal" or "uhhh he's a locker-room leader", "he's our friend".

F%#%@% pathetic
Exactly , the cowboys country club mentality still prevails . An atmosphere where if you’re nice to Jerry and he likes you ,and you have some exposure, then you are safe . There is no fear of getting cut . I thought Jerry should have let Crawford and zeke take better deals or walk . Same should happen with mediocre Dak . Cannot believe he refused 33 mil . What a blunder by both parties .

Even if he is honest and even if he admits he has not played up to his salary, why should he take a cut? He doesn't owe KC anything. It's a business.

It is all a matter of where the man's priorities are. If he loves KC and wants to contend for another Super Bowl then yeah, take the pay cut. But if his primary motivation is money - and there's nothing wrong with that - then he shouldn't budge. He shouldn't hold out, but he shouldn't restructure either.

He's owed around 14 mil for 2020, not guaranteed. If he doesn't budge, he gets cut. And then can get whatever he can on the open market. Judging from his time missed, I'd say he'd be better off taking a lesser salary than testing the open market.

Since he'll be cut and lose around 14 mil if he doesn't restructure, why are you saying he shouldn't restructure?

At this point, no, I don't think a team will pay him in the mid teens. Considering his injury issues, why do you think they would?

Teams have done dumber things in the past. A needy team will jump at the chance to sign a 26 year old star WR for a few mil. under market value.

If money is his major concern, I disagree he better off taking a lesser salary from KC than he would be testing the free agent market. How much do you think KC is willing to pay him? Obviously not $14 mill. What will they offer? $10 million? There’s no way he doesn’t get that much in signing bonus alone from some other team.

IDK, man, w/ his latest injury fiasco, I just don't know that his value is still that high.
