The Dallas Cowboys are America's team because they were nicknamed that, not because they won some kind of title. It is not a yearly award like MVP or ROY.
Ok so if Dallas consistently has the highest rated games as far as viewership and consistently sells the most merchandise and is currently ranked #1 as far as Franchise value that pretty dam sure seems to be a vote by the people of the Dallas Cowboys being America’s Team!

The name Americas Team isn't copyrighted. Any other team is free to use it
All its done for Dallas is paint a bigger target on their backs.

Actually it is. I believe by a company in Minnesota or Wisconsin idk. About a few years ago Jerry and I wanna say Steinbrenner (though he may have already passed and it was one of his kids) attempted to copyright the title but the company in Minnesota or Wisconsin wouldn’t sell the rights. I believe Jerry offered a million.

Yes, especially when ESPN runs that poll every other year on who is now “America’s Team”. I remember an episode on First Take back when Skip was still on there, and one of their guests was the guy who worked on NFL Films who came up with the name. He seemed very noticeably irritated by the whole notion that another team could be called “America Team” when he gave it to the Cowboys. It was an interesting interview.

Back in the day, Sports Illustrated conducted a poll (for you youngsters, by mail-in) regarding the best/worst sportscaster.

Howard Cosell won both categories...and no one else was close.

I don't think they are America's team any more. Jerry has slapped the fans in the face for 13 years and forced us to endure Garrett despite knowing the fans deserved better.
Now it seems apparent that he is preparing to do the same thing with Dak Prescott, who is Jason Garrett 2.0.
If Jerry pays Dak over a hundred million dollars guaranteed with a four or five year contract and the Cowboys don't look like a Championship caliber team in 2020, look for an exodus of us older fans who remember why the Cowboys were America's Team.
I think the Cowboys are Cleveland South.

I'm morbidly curious how long the Cowboys could continue being mediocre and still command the highest ratings. Three straight 5-11 seasons under Campo didn't do it. A 34-32 record under Parcells didn't do it. Ten years of Garrett with nothing to show for it but two playoff wins didn't do it. Could they survive another decade of Garrett-ism?

Who cares. It’s a label we’d gladly give up. It’s done exactly what Landry said it would do.

#1 in revenue and popularity only banner we’ve been hanging up for a couple decades.
