The Real McCoy: DT provides solution Cowboys haven't tried yet, proven talent

usatsi_13472035.jpg

The Dallas Cowboys made some great signings during 2020 free agency, partly because they finally had some money to use. One of those moves was to shore up their defensive line, adding veteran defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

It was a move made out of necessity, but also aided by a new coaching staff who brought a new philosophy for the position. The Cowboys lost Maliek Collins to the Oakland Raiders, leaving a void in the middle of the defense. The team moved quickly, adding McCoy as a strong response.

Bringing in a good veteran DT is a departure from what the Cowboys did under former defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli. When Marinelli was in Dallas, he was in favor of addressing the holes at DT by drafting and plugging away with pedestrian veteran players who made up for their lack of talent with effort. As one of the games best teachers, Marinelli felt he could get the most out of those workman type of bodies.

Part of the reason ole Rod was known as the bum whisperer is because he constantly preferred to use bums.

So Dlaw and Robert Quinn were bums? and if I'm not mistaken, Mckoy said he had conversations with Dallas a couple years ago, but it didnt happen. Let me guess Stephen low balling negotiation tactics were at fault

More on how Marinelli Screwed the pooch !

That's all I needed to read today !

How? They tried to sign him last year, but they couldn't agree on a contract. this is why people going in on Marinelli only have an agenda.

The Cowboys tried to land McCoy last year
When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved on from McCoy last year there were many Cowboys fans that wanted to see the team go and get him then. Ultimately McCoy ended up with the Carolina Panthers with his now-again teammate Dontari Poe.

McCoy mentions early on in the interview that the Cowboys reached out to him last year but that they couldn’t figure things out with a contract. Obviously Dallas managed to figure it out this season (with a contract that many fans are pleased with) which is good to see.

"The Cowboys finally brought in a good player to be a force on the interior of their defensive line. Gone are the days of their defensive tackles being try-hard guys who don’t provide enough pass rush, or can’t stop the run. McCoy has the ability to do both at a high level.

McCoy’s signing could turn out to be one of the better moves in the off-season."

By far my favorite move in free agency this year. Great player with great character who can lead this line and be a role model for younger players to follow.

Certainly the most talented and decorated defensive tackle that this team has had in quite some time. I think lining him up next to Lawrence should be of great benefit to both players.

They tried to sign McCoy last year, unfortunately Stephen Jones was cheap as usual. But being older and McCoy best years behind him, who's to say he will be good.

I don't know if it is fully on Marinelli that we didn't use a premium pick or signing on the position. As the defensive coordinator, I can't say he had enough influence to get Dallas to spend heavily or invest heavily in the position instead of, for whatever reason, shopping for bargains at the spot.

I blame Jones the GM and Garrett the head coach for that more than I do Marinelli.

McCoy could hit a steep decline at anytime. We really don't know if we are getting a good player this year of not

Your takes are so trash. Stephen jones didn't want to open his wallet last season for mccoy he was worried the dust might fly out. Mccoy been wanting to be in dallas. Also, Its a known thing Rod said he liked working with orphans. That's like college coaching mentality that you don't want real talent so you can talk down to them and feel you are superior to those players. Meanwhile in tampa he coached blue chip studs on the D line that probably didn't give him the "respect" he wanted.

Even the trysten hill pick screams this type of mentality that rod had. Made him sign some stupid contract so the kid could thank him everyday for convincing the jones idiots to reach and pick him in the draft over real talent.

the article reads: .." Playing next to McCoy will also benefit DE DeMarcus Lawrence. The sack total for Lawrence was down last season, but McCoy brings the need to be double-teamed on the inside. That attention paid to McCoy on the interior should create more one-on-one opportunities for Lawrence. "
The last time Lawrence had a DT take some of the heat away from him on the outside, Lawrence had a 14.5 sack season. "

- oh pleeeeeze ,playing next to a decent type (at best) like Antwann Woods, who is just another run of the mill journeyman who serves more as a backup, has nothing to do with Dlaw and his 14 sacks, that was about Tank flat beating his RT one on one than Human Log having anything to do with that.

Woods is not even the type to command double team from center and his RG blocker.
And the base 4-3, McCoy as the 3-tech is gonna likely be going to be starting the game lined up right next to whomever will be occupying the starting RDE role. (crawford ? gregory ? Griffin ?)
