The Dallas Cowboys Draft Show argument for Dan Quinn at DC

My initial reaction to drafting Dan Quinn is probably the common reaction of an Atlanta Falcons fan. I live in the suburbs of Atlanta and watch a lot of their games and listen to the local talk radio. My initial reaction is that they should have hired Raheem Morris, but Raheem seems to be looking for HC jobs. If we can steal Raheem with a AHC role I would be happier with all this. But that's not why I'm posting this, I'm posting to give an argument that I think makes sense. It originates with the Dallas Cowboys Draft show and was pushed by Brian Broaddus and Bucky Brooks. Credit those two, please.

DQ can talk. He is really good at it. So the argument goes that the purpose of this hire is to recover a defense much like Richard-Marinelli, which was not great but significantly better than Nolans. The FO likes his teaching skills, which will come into play if we have a limited (or no) training camp.

As a DL guy, there is a nice article by John Owning on Dallas News that suggests how flexible DQ is. I would also point to Grady Jarrett, who is the best DL on the Falcons, was drafted in the 4th round, is a 1T and 3T who is mostly a one gap guy. DQ is not wedded to the weird hybrid front that everyone talks about where 2 DL two gap and two one gap. His best 1T is a one gap guy, and good enough that Falcons fans think the only DT better is Aaron Donald.

NO one ever complained about his fronts, other than the two awful Dimitroff picks of Vic Beasley and Takk. Dimitroff can't draft DEs to save his life (see this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamaal_Anderson ).

He will need help in the secondary. Better talent would help. He loves a dominant SS (i.e. Keanu Neal), but to be plain "in the box" safeties are a dime a dozen. If we keep drafting Trevon Diggs style talent, we can avoid the black hole DB the Falcons had in 2018-2020.

There is no “argument” to be had. Him and Whitt the other hire are disgusting, stupid, and downright despicable. They will go down as the dumbest hire in the offseason if any team. You don’t see any normal ran teams making trains of dumb decisions like Dallas. We definitely have the worst coaching staff in the division, if not the league (and yes, that includes the coachless Eagles as they are hiring candidates that are good and make sense, such as L. Riley)

I listened to the draft show and disagreed with one point Broaddus and Brooks were making. They seemed to be arguing (and I've heard this before) that the DEF didn't have to be great just serviceable to complement the offence which is high powered and the strength of the team.

I think this is flawed thinking. Build me the best DEF you can and spare no expense and leave no stone unturned. Else at some point your serviceable DEF will be turned over just when you need it most.

I think the intent of "getting back to Marinelli-Richard" is not to stop there, but HOW FAST can we recover some of the old defense. In 2018 it was 6th in scoring defense and 2019 it was 11th. Because of the memory of common D concepts, the point is a fast recovery to respectability, and then to, you know, analyze our issues, fix them and perhaps do 2018 one better.

Déjà Vu of last off season. Cowboys nation excited about new personnel & it fell flat on all our faces.

Without watching the show I think they meant it's kind of unrealistic to expect the team to all of a sudden be a dominant defense but to be serviceable is and that they can win with a serviceable defense.

But didn't you get the memo? When Dak comes back Jaylon will be great because we will score so many points no one will run at him again. I can't believe you don't view this as a solid plan.

It is amazing how much better some coaches are with talent. The problem with this D begins on the field, not on the sideline.

Coaches are like chefs. You want a great meal, you better give them great ingredients. Coaching the Cowboys D's have been like Chopped.
Bill?

Never thought of that, that's what Jerry is thinking

Quinn inherited the defense Gus Bradley built in Seattle.

Then he and Whitt got fired in Atlanta.

Yay.

The issue is all 3 levels could use serious Upgrades

be it the draft or FA but in FA they gotta get the guys that can play
Forget free agency. All that cash is headed to Dak.
