At this point anything beats Nolan. I think our personnel is not great by any stretch of the imagination, but if we can get Parsons or Surtain, McCoy back from injury, and add a quality CB or two in free agency I think we have potential to finish in the top 12-16 defenses in the league. I also think that it is within the realm of possibility that LVE and Jaylon resume playing at least at an average level next season rather than the absolute dumpster fire we saw at the linebacker position this year. I also believe a move back to a 4-3 will help us tremendously as the players we have currently really did not fit into the 3-4 very well.

I have been fooled many times by false hope that this team is going to turn a corner, but I don't think the defense will stay as bad as it was last season (which was historic).

The other pro is that the offense should return to a more competent and balanced form. This team was consistently unable to sustain drives and behind early in games. IIRC, they scored 1 freakin opening drive TD. If they can sustain drives and put more than 3 on the board, this defense will improve simply by limiting their exposure. I know its popular to see all this high scoring offense, but the Run and Shoot and Chip Kelly’s quick offense simply gasses the defense.

That makes sense though from memory I feel like this year the Cowboys D tended to solidify in second halves rather than fall apart.

7 Pros and Cons of Cowboys hiring Dan Quinn to be new DC
I don’t know why people are already settling for an average defense as a goal instead of having higher expectations for Quinn. My goal would be to have a top five defense instead of settling for an average defense that depends on the offense to win games. In case people haven’t noticed. This offense can’t be depended on from game to game and the offense is really shaky when facing some of the good teams in the league. The defense should stand alone as an above average unit that does not depend on the offense for anything.

How do you know it will be an average defense? You some kind of NFL savant?

I'd love top five, but if we can get in the top 10, I think we'd be pretty tough if the offense is healthy.

Pros:
Return to the 4-3, ..Yes that instantly helps incumbent Dl guys like DLaw (especially considering high investment) thats just the scheme and alighment
itself. Hope to see variation looks and change up vs basic Str8 4-3 ... but it's huge to add more difference makers and muscle on DL
Speakin' of DL, .i'm still awaiting to see what becomes of the DL coach hire, as Jim Tomsula was a disaster and thanks begone him.

the Safety Need - i'd be very interested to see if team finally invests in a safety per FA, draft or trade. .. i dont expect a safety in 1st rd at all.
and we'll have to see if 2nd rd a possibility; i think FS centerfielder in 3rd rd more likely - but again depends upon how draft board falls

DC hire: i admit that i vastly wanted a reputable vet DC, and too leery about " win now" as well to risk a new kid on the block
and i wasn't up for the likes of Wade Phillip (whose still out of NFL) Quinn was once in charge of a dominant 4-3 defense and i still think team admires the
Legion of Boom style and aggression plus i wanted a well regarded 4-3 guy that had coached just around the corner in
the last few years and in tune with today's NFL style and trend, not 10 and 20 years ago,..

There's gonna be a question of which ex-Seahawk DC shouldve been the choice of Quinn, Bradley or Richard.,
and we've already had a bit of Richard (though i still think he was hampered by coaches around him and upper forces that be) ..i am skeptical of the secondary hire but we'll see what happens.

" ..Here’s a look at who Dan Quinn had on his famous Seattle defenses and who is in those positions on the current Cowboys’ roster:

SS Kam Chancellor – Donovan Wilson
FS Earl Thomas – Darian Thompson
CB1 Richard Sherman – Trevon Diggs
CB2 Byron Maxwell – Anthony Brown
5T – Michael Bennett – DeMarcus Lawrence*
LEO – Cliff Avril – Randy Gregory*
SAM – Bruce Irvin – Dorance Armstrong
MLB – Bobby Wagner – Leighton Vander Esch
WLB – KJ Wright – Jaylon Smith
1T – Brandon Mebane – Antwaun Woods
3T – Tony McDaniel – Trysten Hill

- assume it'll be better player than Thompson
- i think DLaw can handle the 5 tech and like aspect of moving him
both outside and inside vs OG as M. Bennett did as well as added stunts/twists.
- Trysten and Gallimore will battle it out for 3 tech role; Can see both used in nickel paks
- a true legit 1 tech definitely needed; A-Woods is not a starter type at all
- Major issues at LB-/ really need overhaul, imo . Jaylon average as hell; LVE is egg-fragile; Lee needs retire
- Armstrong is JAG; i could see Jaylon at SLB than WLB, LVE could return to WLB;
- Who knows if team will re-sign Aldon Smith; is it 50-50 ..?
- Diggs compares to Sherman in length- ball hawk INT without top physical measurements
- Brown vs Brandon Browner ? maybe better in zone vs man
- Wilson better closer to LOS, underneath vs covering deep halves; physical & turnover maker

The defensive side of our roster will surely need infusions to talent to improve significantly and that will take time. How much it improves awaits to be discovered. I'm willing to do that, without jumping to any premature conclusions. Given sufficient time to improve, I'm quite confident that our opinions will favor what Quinn brings to this team. I think his schemes will be better suited to our defensive personnel.

No pros. One con....he’s working in a no win situation with the roster this upper management puts on the team.
