We aren't in a position to replace him so I think the question is flawed. A better question is will the people in a position to replace him do so? First, we have to understand their relationship. Greg Z is Coach Fassel's guy. It's not in Fassel's best interest for Greg to fail here so after just one game Fassel will have Greg's back.

In a vacuum, it does no one any good to ask this question in the thread title. It's an emotional question designed to get an emotional answer. That's not how this business should be run. And that's not how business decisions should be made.

To win a title, all three systems must be running at peak performance. The special teams are the obvious weak link. It must be solved in the next 3 games or forget about championships.

It may be an emotional question.. but it's going to get a VERY emotional answer if he keeps missing kicks. One more loss by less than a FG when he misses an easy one and he's gone and if Fassel can't let him go then he can go stand in the soup lines with him ..

I would give him another game or two to see if he shakes off the rust. However, the leash is very short.

Now you are moving the goalposts. The question was framed for the present... Should Greg Z be fired now? The answer is no.

"If he keeps missing kicks" is added information to the topic. You are now introducing future events to the equation. The answer to that is yes, if he continues missing kicks, he would get replaced.

When you sign another kicker mid-season, you generally don't get a super elite one, but you can get a competent one, depending on what the market is like. Then again, Zuerlein may already be a competent kicker who just had an off night. If that's the case, it's probably not worth making the change. However, if he's a kicker who has hit the wall, that's another story. One remembers Vanderjagt. He was once a great kicker, but when we got him, he had hit the wall. Either his confidence was trashed or something had gone wrong with his body where he just couldn't do it anymore. At this point, I don't see proof that Zuerlein is a "hit the wall" kicker, but his bad performance last night is an eyebrow-raiser.

I'm also not up on what the free-agent kicker market is like right now. Anyone know? Anyone have an opinion?

Well it's not as if we can go to the corner drugstore for a kicker and plutonium for the DeLorean.

We can’t now. His contract is guaranteed and we’d be replacing him with someone that hasn’t made a roster. We really should have had a kicker at training camp though to at least give us an option.

Probably true. Does hindsight say we should have kept the ex CFL kicker, Hajrullahu, who was here for a week? Depends on if Zuerline was actually fully recoved and in playing shape. I don't fully trust the FO to manage some injuries.

Hopefully he will get some opportunities in the next few weeks where it is not in a "miss and we lose" situation.

If he consistently nails kicks pretty much like he did his last one, you keep him around. If even the makes are shaky, then ya, you probably look to replace him. But you better be sure because there probably isn't anything really out there that you would want to hang your hat on.

What is really uncertain is whether or not Zuerline was recovered/rehabed enough.
If not, then is he screwing up his health by playing?
It seems that once a kicker is injured, most of them never really come back to the same baseline.
