Bill blew it by punting in overtime

The Patriots averaged 10.9 yards per pass attempt today (this stat excludes sacks)
The Patriots averaged 4.4 yards per rush attempt

So what did Belichick do in overtime needing just 3 yards with the Pats at their own 46?

He did what other traditional dinosaur coaches do: punted. Surrendered the ball for 34 yards of field, which wasn't likely to matter to the Cowboys offense, which gobbled up 567 yards on the day.

The sport is getting smarter. People like Bill...are not.

Come on. If he doesn’t get the first right there he’s gifting the cowboys a shot as a fg to win the game.

I mean, maybe in the old days when you could kick a fg to win you try it. But now even if they make it they still are a long way from winning the game.

He made the only decision you could make in that situation.

It was the right call to punt. I don’t care what the stats say. You don’t go for it there.

Not it wasn't. NE had not done one single thing to stop Dallas today. The refs were 100x more resistant to our efforts than NE. Now in the redzone, they stuffed us more but by the time we get down there, we would have won anyways. We only needed 3 to win. What do you have more confidence in, picking up 3 yards or stopping this explosive Dallas offense, something they had not done all day? Even when it was 3rd and 25, they gave up 24.

Punting in OT at that spot of the game is for losers. And they lost. And Bill has proven to be a loser without Brady.

I agree. If you’re playing against a powerhouse offense, you have to play to win and take risks that you typically wouldn’t.

Belichick didn’t do that, and it cost them.
Well, if they didn’t make it they still lose. And bill absolutely gets blamed for it, unlike now when he isn’t get any at all (except in this thread).

McCarthy should have punted during our Cowboys 1st series where it was 4th & 1 inside our own 35. It gifted the Patriots an easy 7 points. Maybe McCarthy's terrible "analytics" game management scared Belichick into punting?

Have you forgotten how many times we've already converted 4th down in "risky" situations this year?

No risk it, no biscuit. Bill goes to bed hungry.

They did stop us at times. And making a team drive 80 yards or more your chances of stopping them are better than to stop them from getting 20 yards for a FG.
So it was the right thing to do. It just didn’t work.

..lol....bro, thats why we have day jobs. And they are coaches. So many unseen variables go into play. OT is Sudden Death. They fail, leaves Dallas already in FG pos.

The new breed of coaches have day jobs, and they are going to be keeping those jobs longer. They trust math and they trust their offenses. THEY GO FOR 3 YARDS in that situation.

Only real shot of them winning the game was to go for it, though. I think that’s the point the OP was making.

The probability of the Pats getting the ball back after punting was very low. His defense had already given up 500+ yards, but Belichick voluntarily gave up the ball to gain 34 yards of field position. And for the Cowboys offense, those 34 yards are gained in a play or two.
