I have not seen this discussed much here so I thought I would start a thread. I will admit I was jacked up when we converted the fake punt and super confused at what was happening after. Looking back at it makes me think the following:

1. We trust our punter to convert third down more than we trust our 40 million dollar QB.
2. I guess the plan was to make San Fran think we were running another play to get them to burn a time out but they called our bluff and said go for it morons and we had nothing actually planned. Total clown show.

that's a reach....we trust the punter....seriously. big reach..

its called desparation. we played desparate from the get go....we acted desprate. played desparate. played scared.

the fake punt was good. it worked. the stupidity was we stayed in punt formation thinking that's going to confuse SF...it was quite Jr. High move on McCarthy's part.....you are behind. you are desparate. you execute a fake punt. you get first down and you go into punt formation again....who the heck would fall for that....SF was daring them to either throw it again with the punter or punt it....that's what we should be talking about...the stupidity of the coaching.

I’m not sure but I believe they left the punt team on and put Noah Brown or Goodwin in the wildcat.

the objective was to run another play against the SF punt return team. However, the referee allowed SF to substitute despite the Cowboys not changing personnel, because I believe someone came off the sideline celebrating the original fake punt.

ultimately, it was too much to ask for, with such a dumb and undisciplined team.

McCarthy answers this question in press conference. We were planning to run another play, but our players were celebrating on the field so the refs let SF make subs put their d back in. So we put our O back in

we seem to be better at ideas than execution

Not accurate. See my explanation above
We didn’t go into punt formation again lol. We were going to run another play using the special teams players. Probably a wild cat snap and run.

dumb player or two stepped on field so refs let SF substitute. So we put our o back in

Watching Bones Fassel during that whole sequence was like watching a Keystone Cops or Three Stooges episode. Watching McCarthy look at Fassel was also a laugh out loud scene. It looked like a middle school B team trying to get a trick play implemented. Pathetic.

I remember the Saints punter trying to throw for a first down, while they had Brees. The commentator said, I would trust my QB before I trust my punter. That's where all the QB vs punter talk comes from.

But all it really is, is the element of surprise.

This isn't really a reasonable comment. Surely you don't think when the Packers or Tampa/NE have run fake punts over the years it's because they don't trust Rodgers and Brady do you? The point of a fake punt is the element of surprise, which a team wouldn't have with it's regular QB in the game.

Now before people start saying Dak isn't Rodgers or Brady - of course he isn't. Those guys are clearly some of the best ever (arguably the best), but that only proves that fake punts aren't about trusting the QB.

Sorry I stand corrected then...but they left the punt team out there....that is just as stupid.....

MM should have told the offense, be ready. We are running a fake punt. As soon as play is done. Run in there and run a hurry up offense.

We weren't ready coaching wise....you don't run two trick plays in a row.

Would have been brilliant if it had worked. Like the earlier planned lateral that Wilson screwed up. The creativity is promising but when not prepared enough to execute right this stuff just looks embarrassing.

Yeah it’s ok to not like it. I hear u. It was planned though. These things aren’t spit balled on the fly. McCarthy wasn’t going to tell the offense to run back. It was scripted and practiced. Same as the QB draw at the end. Dak wasn’t checking out of it. They have practiced that situation all year

We were going to fake punt our way down the field. The old, "Even though they know what's coming they can't stop it" mentality we used during the Emmitt Smith days.

My only question is who was the bottle cap on this play - Bryan Anger or Noah Brown?

What happened with the fumble? I got excited and expecting a commercial for change of possession went to freshen my beverage. When I returned San Fran had the ball and I heard it was the right call.

Hell...I still don't know what they were doing....must have been something the special teams coach saw in a high school game.

It was a poor attempt to copy what Arizona did to us two weeks earlier, when we WERE confused and DID have to burn a timeout.
