Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy's challenge to Micah Parsons: 'Be an elite player

i

Parsons' second-year jump won't be measured by statistics, McCarthy says, but by how he impacts the team on and off the field.

FRISCO, Texas -- Micah Parsons has had a fun offseason in his new hometown. The Dallas Cowboys linebacker has attended Dallas Stars and Dallas Mavericks games. He threw out the first pitch at a Texas Rangers game. He was backstage after Errol Spence Jr.’s welterweight title fight at AT&T Stadium.

There was also a hilarious pregame puck drop at the Hershey Bears game back in his home state of Pennsylvania, where he walked to center ice and never waited for the players to join him.

Parsons is doing his best to make sure it is not getting in the way of football as he prepares for his second season.

For McCarthy, Parsons’ second-year jump won’t be measured by statistics -- like building on a franchise-rookie-record 13 sacks in 2021.

McCarthy places NFL players into four categories, ranging from good players, to good players who have great moments, to individuals who consistently perform at an extremely high level, to, finally, the elite players.

“And that’s what we’re all hoping that these guys develop into because elite players make players better around them,” McCarthy said. “Obviously Micah had a lot of great moments last year, but our desire -- and it needs to be his desire -- is for him to be an elite player, not just a great player. ...

"How they work, how they compete in practice, how they compete in the weight room, how they compete at garbage can basketball in the locker room. I don’t know. That’s all part of culture growth and establishing that, and that’s something that he has an opportunity to really make a huge impact in our football team."

Even though he is entering only his second season, Parsons is viewed as a leader. He is arguably the Cowboys' best defensive player. A year ago, he was more measured on when to speak his mind.

“I’m able to be a little more [vocal] with the guys, explaining what I like to do, what I don’t like to do, what helps me if you do this that way,” Parsons said. “And just having that open communication this offseason, just been beneficial for the guys. I think if you look at the way we’re practicing and we’re looking at the film, we look so much better than [when] we were starting last year.”

Meh, he was elite last year. I know what he's trying to do, but don't gaslight him either---the whole league told him how elite he was already as DROY and leading our team in sacks. Maybe "leader of the team" or something mimicking that would hit home harder.

The article didn't state it for some reason, but MM defined elite as not just making great plays but making other players around him better.

I'm glad the coach wants him to be even better and isn't satisfied with him remaining at his rookie level, even if that level was pretty great.

I'm not on the Parsons train as of yet. How many times have we seen a rookie play lights out, only to squander after the big contract?! Players of today get lazy after the money is in the bank. They lose heart! Most recent: Ezekiel Elliott

Parsons will be the leader of the defense. We needed a player like this for years. He had not played football in a meaningful game for over a year until the start of the 2020 season.
This year, we get TB in our house, and Micah knows more what to expect. Tommy will not know what hit him. He will have nightmares of 11 for the rest of the season, if he lasts that long. :muttley:
2021 brah i mean TB game 1 was 2021 MP drafted in 21..did i miss something LOL

he didnt play in 2020 skipped that year of college so he hadn't played in a very long time and believe that why he slipped to us..this is a top 5 talent teams forgot. Jmar chase similar when they took year off folks forgot how good they were come draft time, and they didn't disappoint.

When you've got such an extraordinary leader of men as McCheese at HC and then combine that with a pass rush mentor the likes of Hot Boy Lawrence...
I mean seriously.

What better learning environment could you ask for a generational player's development.

Just like with the insane depth of this roster, this stuff is practically unfair to the rest of the league.

That's a challenge?

How is it a challenge to someone that was elite the moment he stepped onto the field? The guy won DROY for crying out loud..

Hey, Aaron Rodgers! I challenge you to be an accurate passer!

Lawrence Taylor, do you think you could try being a hard hitter? I know that's a challenge.

You know, Larry Allen, with some really hard work and commitment, there is a possibility that you could turn out to be pretty capable offensive guard. Are you up to that challenge?

You wanna issue a real challenge, coach? Try challenging your DT's to be great run defenders. Challenge LVE to improve upon his rookie season instead of trending the opposite direction. Challenge your young O-linemen to take the next step up.

Or you could just continue to challenge the sun to shine.

he doesnt want Parsons drinking his own koolaide this early as his offseason has been a pat on the back tour,. MP has been everywhere you would think he just won a SB LOL he didnt. we needed his best game toi be the 9er game and while he wasn't bad he wasn't his best,. Everyone rides Zeke and dak for not being their best when it really counts, is it wrong for ach to point that out to his players especially young player like Parsons?

we need all our players to be their best in the biggest games and not many have...

He reminds me of Deion. Legend before he hits the field. Deion became legend. Let's see you do it. I'll be watching. Might want to humble yourself superman.

Those Cowboys nineties teams were probably the least humble in history.

Nate Newton to an opponent mid-game: "Why you try so hard. You know you gonna lose."

Deion after the 95 season Super Bowl when asked when they took Limos to the game: "Cause we Stars."

Big Mike just needs to keep his mouth shut and be the walk-about coach that he is. Last season Parsons was tearing it up while Mike was staring cluelessly at the jumbotron trying to figure out how to challenge a play. Let Quinn do the motivating.

Swagger, attitude, how much you believe in yourself is a big part of being amazing at whatever you do. Add skill sets and God given talent, that is a good recipe for success.

I'd rather hear something about continuing to focus on improving every year. I fear that Micah may take that message as increasing his sack count every year. I'd rather he continue to develop on his total craft and not just one area. I personally would rather have more rushed throws that contribute to increased INT's. But that's just me.

I have great respect for Staubach, Barry Sanders, Megatron for being humble Super Stars; however, in general I think attitude/confidence has a huge role in winnin

The personality of Jimmy's teams was a huge part of their dominance.

The problem comes when players are over-confident.
- Dez trying to show up Revis was embarrassing.
- Dez was strutting around the field while Revis was spanking him.

The NFL has already informed Micah Parsons and the rest of the world that he is elite due to his performance in his rookie season. They named him DROY, Pro Bowler, and 1st team All Pro.

We often say Parsons is different. Why? Because he gets it.

This type of player needs no incentive to be an elite performer. That is burnt into his hard drive. Do you think that Tom Brady or Aaron Donald needs to be motivated by a coach? Players like these have a different mentality. They are not chasing elitism. They are chasing history and being elite is simply the pre-requisite.

Think of an Olympic race. The leader is the only one not being challenged until someone passes him during the course of the race. The runners that are challenged are the ones looking at the back of another runner's head.

It is the coaches that should be challenging themselves and not the player.. McCarthy needs to challenge himself and Quinn to use Parsons in a way that best utilizes all of his skillset in order to build an elite defense. McCarthy should discuss that challenge.

That was my first thought when I first read the post headline, why you ragin on one of our best players coach?, if you want to rag on somebody I have 1/2 a dozen or so that played far below Micah's level or even their own level. After I read the article and saw how MM broke down players into 4 categories it did make a bit more sense, MM is basically saying don't be a one trick pony come back this year ,next year, and the year after that with the same intensity you showed us last year and then they will call you elite.
