What a legend. Hope he gets in there. Chuck's 86! The Dallas Cowboys have 19 people associated with its franchise in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Only nine teams have more, and all of them but one were established in the NFL at least 10 years before the Cowboys.

Looks promising

Exactly, I like his chances against the other two. He was clearly the better player. He played in a couple of Super Bowls, has won a championship and is the only player to be named Super Bowl MVP on a losing team. Plus he played in 11 playoff games, only one fewer than Joe Klecko and Ken Riley combined.

Senior candidates aren't competing against each other for a spot, nor are they competing against the modern era candidates or the contributor category. Howley, Klecko and Riley all can be enshrined if they get 80% of the vote next January. Or, none of them can be if they don't get 80%.

As an old timer, I cannot think of any Cowboys player who deserves it more, not even Walls or Woodson.

Personally I don’t think Everson Walls deserves it that much. Ken Riley had more INTs which is why he’s ahead of him. Everson Walls is best known for getting beat by Dwight Clark on The Catch.

I’m not sure exactly how it works but in my opinion Joe Klecko and Ken Riley weren’t Hall of Fame players.

Since the conversation has turned into who should be inducted next, my favorites for next are Woodson and Witten-who should be a lock.

Strongly disagree on both. Klecko was dominant at both DE and DT (first player to make the Pro Bowl at both positions), and Ken Riley is fifth all time in interceptions. Both are very deserving.

Chuck is in great shape to finally make it to his rightful place in history. As the only losing team Super Bowl MVP this accolade has been denied way too long to this man. I'm pulling for ya!

Joe Klecko only had two double digit sack seasons and sacks weren’t an official stat during those seasons, 1980 and 81. He was a very good player but I didn’t see him as a Hall of Fame player. Ken Riley had 65 INTs but only returned one for a TD. His return yardage was pretty low, he didn’t get much out of those picks. Let me be clear, I’m not saying they won’t get in I’m just saying I don’t think they were Hall of Fame players in my opinion.

Chuck Howley, Joe Klecko and Ken Riley have been named the first three senior finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

In an effort to boost the number of inductees amid a perception that some worthy players have been overlooked, the Hall of Fame allowed three seniors to make it straight through to the final vote of the full Hall of Fame Selection Committee. All three of them will be inducted in the Class of 2023 if they all get 80 percent of the vote from the Selection Committee. That seems likely.

In addition to Howley, Klecko and Riley, the Selection Committee will choose one coach or contributor and up to five modern era players for the Class of 2023, meaning as many as nine new Hall of Famers could be inducted next summer.

Howley was a first-round draft pick of the Bears in 1958 but was a backup as a rookie, played just three games in 1959 and didn’t play at all in 1960, and his career easily could have ended there. But after the Bears traded him to the Cowboys, he became an All-Pro linebacker, and the Super Bowl V MVP. That was bittersweet, as he is the only Super Bowl MVP from the losing team, but he helped the Cowboys win Super Bowl VI the next year.

Give Chuck Howley, a relic from the 60s and 70s, a certificate of participation.
Tired of the annual belly aching for an athlete who would be hard a pressed to make any NFL team today, let alone invited to the combine that they didn't have back in frontier times.

Ex-HOF players and coaches (other than Dan Fouts, James Lofton and Tony Dungy) and even contributors (except Bill Polian) are not involved the discussions and voting. Just media folk, which is generally counts as one vote per team. Here is the breakdown of what Howley faces (and basically what anyone considered faces):

Mideast votes

Baltimore: Scott Garceau, 105.7 The Fan/WMAR-TV

Tony Dungy, NBC Sports "Football Night in America" (Hall of Famer)
Dan Fouts, Broadcaster (Hall of Famer)
Clark Judge, Talk of Fame Network
Peter King, NBC Sports
James Lofton, CBS Sports (Hall of Famer)
Alex Marvez, SiriusXM NFL Radio
Bill Polian, SiriusXM NFL Radio (Hall of Famer)
Sal Paolantonio, ESPN #
Lisa Salters, ESPN "Monday Night Football"
Jim Trotter, NFL Network
Charean Williams, Pro Football Talk
Barry Wilner, retired, Associated Press

Here are the Southeast votes that Dallas "belongs" to:

Darryl Ledbetter, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Rick Gosselin, Talk of Fame Network
John McClain, retired, Houston Chronicle
Sam Kouvaris, SamSportsLine.com
Armando Salguero, Outkick.com
Jeff Duncan, Times-Picayune
Ira Kaufman

Anyone should understand the type of gauntlet someone associated with Dallas must pass through if they have ever heard any of the above talk about the Hall of Fame versus the "Hall of Very Good" bunk. It is a real deterrent for advancement as far as regional consideration is concerned. It makes it unnecessary difficult collecting 80% of the vote

Gantlet! Gantlet!
A gauntlet is a glove.
A gantlet is an ordeal that involves flogging, torture and reading Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged."

Congratulations! You win the god awful post of the day award.
