So is 3 tech out of consideration for the 1st round now?

I know Melton is technically only here on a 1 year deal, but what are the odds we draft another pass rushing DT in the 1st? I'm not saying I personally still wouldn't take Donald, but I really don't see Jerry and crew taking 1 now.

Now DE would be the obvious position to address, but if Clowney, Mack, and Barr are all gone like they should be I don't see a good fit at DE at #16. Ford is small for a 4-3 DE and Ealy would probably be a reach. So basically, is Jerry going to do something crazy like draft a WR? What are our options on the D side of the ball not including DT's?

I have concerns that Jerry feels that he doesn't have to draft a DT. If he feels like that then Dallas is in trouble.

Dallas still needs to be open minded at the same time focus on the dline but not reach. Hypothetically let's say they sign Allen and Jernigan is there to be pick, I say select him. This will give the team a solid dline for the 2014 season. We have to think long term.

Dallas needs are DT (2), DE (2), OG, RT, LB, S, WR, & QB. That's just my opinion and they can't get all this in one season too. Therefore, this will take two to three years.

i would still take BPA which will likely be donald or Barr
would prefer a trade down if possible
not a fan of ford in rd 1 even after trade down

BPA all the way. A stud passing rushing DE is now our clear #1 need, but that doesn't at all mean we HAVE to hit it with the 16th overall pick. It would be incredible to land a stud RDE, but unlikely in this draft... plenty of solid options will be available in R2 and R3 (Lawrence, Attaochu, both Smith's, etc.).

Don't rule out OLine or even WR...but I think trading down would be the best move.

It seems wide open. I see a 50% chance of a trade down. Somebody that is highly rated will probably fall like Donald, Barr or WR Mike Evans.

A trade down would bring in another set of options like Hageman, Ford, Ealy, Sua'Filo,...

I hope they go BPA with a few exceptions. If nobody is there they like or a QB falls then trade down.

BPA is much easier to say on the internet than it is to do in real life. We all know people would literally be calling for Jerry's head if the #16 pick was a WR other than Watkins or Evans. I doubt anybody would care where that WR was ranked on our board.

The Cowboys wrote their contract for Melton with caution that he'll be a long term fix here. I don't know why they'd do that and then not consider a 3 tech in the 1st round of the draft.

They've said before they don't believe in taking a guy in the 1st round who is not an immediate starter. I suppose if they cling to that then they won't consider a 3. I think that's a mistake.

getting melton provides more options in the draft...prior to that signing, the DL was not looking good at all, but with him in there, they are not locked into a DT in the first two rounds....but, that should not preclude them from taking one if he is highest remaining on their board whenever they actually make their first or second selections

I hope we don't discount 3 tech in the first round, the value at DE seems to be in rounds 2 and 3. Nothing wrong with building a pass rush from the inside out, and I'd rather have a talented but incomplete line than a line filled with meh players. If we don't find our next Ware this year it's okay, add the best player that drops to you and play ball

I hope they consider a #3 technique early on in the draft (prior to the 4th round) if one represents a good value.

Heck on passing downs why have a #1 out there? You could bring in another #3 to pair with Melton.

No if Aaron Donald is there at 16, I would find it very hard to pass on him. He could still be dynamic alongside Melton on passing situations

See, that's why I typically don't like trade downs. I would be fine with Barr, Donald, or Evans at 16. Any of those 3 would be a big help for us. However, trade back and pick up a third for Hageman, Ford, Ealy, Sua'Filo... isn't what I'd want.

I do like Ford as a part time pass rusher, and I think Sua'Filo is going to be a very good player, but I don't like Ealy or Hageman. It is iffy and the talent - even in this crazy deep draft - drops off quite a bit.

I prefer to just stay there and take a player we really like... particularly if it is Donald there.

Now last year, I agreed with the trade back. Once Richardson, Cooper and Star Lotuleile went off the board, there wasn't really anyone else I liked very much, so dropping down in talent was going to happen anyway, IMO.

This year, if a good player is there at 16, I hope we just take him and start planning the board for the second round. Or better yet, start looking into trading into the early part of the second to get a player we like who might slide because of size (Shazier) or position (Sua'Filo). If Crighton is there early in the second, I'm trying to trade a pick to move up and take him.

I always lean towards moving up and taking players that the team really loves if they don't think they'll last.

Teams that draft well usually do a good job of guessing which players will be available at their pick. Value wise, there's a good chance that one of the top rated players is available at #16. It could be Donald, Barr or Evans. If you trade up and take one of them and then 1 of the other 2 make it to 16, then you've missed on value. There are some questions about each of those 3 in terms of value.
Evans - WR is not a top need. Would other teams pay a premium to trade up to 16 for him?

Barr - is he a good fit at DE or is he just a 3-4 OLB?

Donald - Great fit but now they have Melton.

The questions wouldn't prevent me from drafting any of them, but it would prevent me from trading up.
